Hyper-V Agent Backup w/CSV

Created: 02 Oct 2012 | 2 comments

I have searched and searched regarding this topic and still cannot find a *definitive* answer on best/supported practice to backup multiple Hyper-V hosts.

BE 2010 R3 standalone media server

I have 3 Server 2008 R2 machines serving as Hyper-V hosts w/cluster shared volumes to an IBM SAN.  Total guets number about 55 with a mix of Server 2003, Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2 guest OS.  Each host has over 100 GB ram...more than enough to cover fail-over scenarios.

The SAN contains 9 volumes, with only 6 containing production data, meaning that there are multiple guets on each volume.

My question:

Given that the CSVs go into "Backup in progress, redirected access" mode when any given guest is being backed up, does this mean that every guest must be included in the same backup job?  Including guests in jobs that may cause simultaneous access to the same CSV volume would appear to be an issue...would this not cause multiple CSVs to try and go into "Backup in progress, redirected access"?  What is everybody else doing in this scenario?

This is a known issue and has been documented -

Looks like there is only this workaround offfered at the moment and has been described in -

There is another Microsoft blog artile about troubleshooting involved.

Thanks for the reply Jaydeep...

However, those postings do not really answer my question.  I'm not asking how to troubleshoot the "Backup in progress, redirected access" issue...I think we all know that this is just a fact of life with CSV right now.  I'm asking about simultaneous backup jobs which would seem to cause a conflict because each would try to put another volume into that mode.  I was asking what other people do...put all guests into a single job so that they run sequentially...or has the agent been deemed "not operational" and it cannot be used?
