I need to re-run failed instances of job

  • 1.  I need to re-run failed instances of job

    Posted Sep 12, 2013 10:51 AM

I have that I have run on 396 computers; 352 ran fine, but 44 failed due to network issues and the comptuer was not powered on.

I can group the list by Completed and Failed then sort the list by computer, so I can see the computers where it failed.

How do I schedule a rerun of these 44 computers?

We are using Symantec Management Console 7.1.

    Thanks,
    Lou

This capability has been added to ITMS 7.5.  You will be able to select the task instance and choose 're-run on failed'

I would just re-run it by hand - right-click and go start now.

For 44 machines it won't take too long.

We have the same issue - hopefully 7.5 will be released soon.

To solve this, I create managed software policies that are scoped to a filter... the filter is basically "is X not installed"

Then I schedule the policy for every 15 minutes or once a day, so if it fails to install, it will try again at the next interval.

    Sally,

The Job that I am running, cannot be a policy.  It restarts the computer to make the BIOS changes take effect.  I was told that a Policy will start from the beginning once the computer restarts.

That's why it needs to be a Job; the Job will restart where it left off after the restart.

I don't mind if this proceedure is somewhat manual, right now.  I need to get to encrypt these machines and keep track of the ones that fail, so I can rerun the Job after the failure is resolved.

    Any Ideas?

when you are in that view select all of the completed computers and hit "delete" this will leave all of teh failed computers which you can now reschedule the task on

    HTH Carlsson,

I have considered doing that, but then I loose the original job statistics.  I don't see the computer that it did complete normally.

All of this information (Job, computer, sucess/fail) should be in a DB somewhere......

How can I get at that DB and query this information?

    Thanks,

    Lou

    Lou,

Would cloning the job and editing the list in the cloned one work?

    CFarrell,

When you say clone, do you mean making a new job?

I'm looking at the "Task Status" and seeing the job description, start and end times....etc.

As you can see, the third line down says 11 computers and 18% Successful. So I want to rerun just the 82% of the 11 Computers that failed and not the ones that were successful.

Is there a way to do this?

    Thanks,
    Lou

     Lou,

After looking this over again I’m not sure you can accomplish what you are looking for (keeping the info for tracking purposes).  It seems to me that the method carlsson proposed would be the easiest method for a small job, but also creating a new schedule, and using the repeat feature might work better in your situation. The only catch there is adding each computer manually.

You can create a filter that would include computers that the last execution for this job was a failure then schedule a job on that filter.
