Has anyone tried using the Symantec Portal for CMS 7.1 with compatibility mode and IE 9? Does anyone know when it will be compatible with IE9?

There are issues with it. You're going to want to use IE8. Even compatibility mode in IE9 will not save you. As Jim said, supported in SP2.
What about FireFox and Safari? Any Support on those browsers?
Nope, not supported. They work to varying degrees.
