  • 1.  IE 9 running on Winxp with Symantec Virtualization Layer

    Posted Nov 08, 2012 06:24 PM

    Hello.

I have a group of windows xp users and they have to upgrade their computers to win7 to use ie9 because of a website which only works with ie9

is it possible with symantec workspace virtualisation (or any tools with CMS 7.1) to give them a IE9 icon on their desktop?

    Thanks.

    Hello,

If you have installed Software Management Solution plug-in on clients you have 2 ways:

You may create shortcut on any computer(iexplorer.exe for IE 7, 8 and 9 is in the same path) and deliver it via Package Delivery task on desktop for current logged user(or on Public Desctop) on client computers.(Package delivery is very similar like a Quick Delivery, but in Package delivery you not need to define command line, more about Quick Delivery you can read in Symantec Software Management 7.1 Best Practices)

Also you may create a software resources with the reg files(which will enable the IE icon on the Desktop), add execution command line(regedit.exe /s "name of the reg file.reg") and execute it on client computers by using Managed Delivery Policy and run it under current logged on user(read about Managed Delivery Policies in Symantec Software Management 7.1 Best Practices)

Note: current logged on user should have the rights to mergee the reg file.

You may read more about reg files by the next link:

    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/167811-internet-explorer-desktop-icon-create-windows-7-a.html

Also you may publish Software Resources with reg files on Software portal.

If you have any question about how does this works, please do not hesitate to ask.

    Regards,

    Dmitri

Hello. Thanks for the reply. I'm not clear on the process of getting IE9 on WinXP, I have read that this isn't even possible to have ie9 on xp because xp only supports upto ie8.

All of your explination about this was in a couple of lines which wasn't so clear.

Also you may create a software resources with the reg files(which will enable the IE icon on the Desktop), add execution command line(regedit.exe /s "name of the reg file.reg")

Im still left a little confused.

Yes, it's not possible to install IE9 on WinXP(there is an explanation why). I meant that after upgrade to windows 7 if you want to put the IE icon on desktop, as it's hided by default you may do one of the thing I mentioned about in post before to have IE icon on the desktop.

Also you may create a software resources with the reg files(which will enable the IE icon on the Desktop), add execution command line(regedit.exe /s "name of the reg file.reg")

If you have installed Software Management Solution(by default it's a part of CMS) you may deliver and install any software or just deliver some package by adding it to NS as Software Resource. For more information you may read  Symantec Software Management 7.1 Best Practices starting from page number 10(there is described what is the Software Resource) and on page number 18 you may read about command lines.

Reg files what I mentioned about will unhide the IE icon on desktop for Windows 7(by default the IE icon on desktop is hided from user) and command line what I mentioned about will do it silently.

Also you should not forget to execute the command line for current logged user, otherwise IE icon on desktop will appear not for current logged user.

Are you really asking how to Install an application in to the Symantec Virtualization Layer? curius if it will work with XP? How to deploy the IE9 application to the virtual layer on XP? If someone can answer these questions, im in a similar situation and would find these answers beneficial.

Is it possible to upgrade your systems to 7 and then virtualize the software that is requiring to stay on XP?
