    Thanks again for your response.

I kept searching and came across this. Here is what I have found in the "https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20100811171926EN_EndUserProfile_en_us " and worked just fine. Here is the instruction from above.

    1. Start Internet Explorer.

    2. On the Tools menu, click Manage add-ons.

    3. In the Manage Add-ons window, under Add-on Types, select Toolbars and Extensions.

    4. If you find any suspicious toolbar listed, select that toolbar, and click Disable.

    5. In the Manage Add-ons window, under Add-on Types, select Search Providers.

    6. Select a search engine, and click Set as default.

    7. Select the unknown search engine, and click Remove and Close.

    8. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

    9. In the General tab, under Home page, enter the address of your preferred page.

    10. Click Apply and OK.

    11. On the desktop, right-click the Internet Explorer shortcut and select Properties.

    12. In the Internet Explorer Properties window, under the Shortcut tab, in the Target field, delete the text after iexplore.exe"

    13. Click Apply and OK to save the changes.

    14. Click Close.

Thanks for posting this, rantey!  Please do mark your thread "solved" so that it will be indexed in searches, and future victims in the same situation can find the procedure they need.  &: )

In my experience it is these last few steps which are most crucial:

    1. On the desktop, right-click the Internet Explorer shortcut and select Properties.
    2. In the Internet Explorer Properties window, under the Shortcut tab, in the Target field, delete the text after iexplore.exe"

    3. Click Apply and OK to save the changes.

    4. Click Close.

On a computer that I cleaned, I had to find everywhere that the IE shortcut was located and manually remove that extra text after .exe.

    Many thanks,

    Mick
