  • 1.  Image Creation problem

We have just installed GSS 2.0, and are testing image creation and deployment. I have an issue with pulling an image from a PC with dual partitions. The client PC has been partitioned into 2 Windows XP (sp-2) partitions (for a training lab). Both partitions boot fine. No compression is used, and there is some extra drive space available.

I have tested with the Ghost client installed on partition 1 (previously, I had the Ghost client installed in both partitions). The GSS console sees the PC. Executing the "get image" task, results in the PC rebooting, and starting the ghost program. However, all I see is a blue and gray window, with the Symantec logo. No data ever appears within the window.

From the GSS server, I see the image creation task is running. No client has connected (and it has not failed).

From the log, the following are successful (and then it stops)
client file missing - copying from the server now
client file missing - copying from the server now
    Update DOS system files
    Update DOS Network Drivers
    To Virtual Partition

The PC is now locked up. CTRL-ALT-DEL will not reboot the PC. I need to use the power button, or the reset switch. If I cancel the task, no errors appear in the log file. If I reboot the PC before canceling the task, I get the following error:
    Details for: Clone
Clone failed and could not open the ghosterr.txt file for retrieval.

Once the PC reboots (either with or without canceling the task) I see it boot into DOS for a second, then it reboots loads Windows normally.

The motherboard is an Intel G865GLC. Ghost sees the NIC as an Intel PRO 1000 (which is correct).

Any ideas where to go now for getting a dual-boot PC cloned? I am trying to grab the entire drive (not individual partitions), and will be deploying it into a lab with the same hardware.

    Hi Bradley,

Sounds like Ghost is hanging while initializing.
What is the brand of your machine?

Maybe you can try adding the switch -nousb to the image create task?
The -nousb switch tells ghost to not to enumerate USB devices during initialization. It seems to have helped some others on the forum when ghost hanged.

    Cheers

    Chris

    Chris,

Thanks, that made all the difference. It's ghosting now.
