  • 1.  imaging not working, winpe just hanging

    Posted Apr 07, 2011 09:25 AM

Hey guys i'm pulling my hair out now...

I'm trying to image and winpe just hangs (attached lots of screen shots :-) )

in the dos window of winpe i run an ipconfig and ping my server and all is good.

but my job i created the status the backup image is "Waiting for the agent to get the task"

i know the job does not have a prepare for image creation task, but you don't need one for an image backup....?

and all i'm trying to test is to make sure i can actually get a backup of something.

the xp pc does have the deployment plugin installed...

    can anyone spot something?

I stand corrected you don't have a TFTP issue... Have you looked at your logs in the following dirs x:\progra~1\altiris\. You can use notepad in the WinPE image to view the logs and get more details on what the agent is going.

Make sure that pectaget.exe is running. Type taskmgr at the command prompt and see if it running.  If not running type ping NS_server it could be a DNS issue.

furthermore, check x:\program files\altiris\altiris agent\logs\ check the agent.log and pectagent.log or post them here.

    i'm adding the logs below.

    the pectagent was running.

i also found this log entry on the server

Task instance Re-Quick run on 71XP1 (4/8/2011 12:09:02 PM) is being put to sleep until 4/8/2011 12:24:09 PM. Instance GUID: d32d2b2d-9edb-4400-87fd-41c02ea9b1d9

my maintenance window is set to 24 hours.

don't know if this helps but i'm trying the image job on a xp vm.

i also came acroos an article where they spoke about your waik folder being to large... mine was; i reinstalled winpe and the size was correctly 340mb... but that did not change anything

    pectagent.ini

    the logs look ok.

Do you get the same error if your assign a simple dir task to the same client?

Also, what is the configuration?  NS with site servers or just 1 NS test?

    not yet mark,

I'm going to look at my configuration as nelson suggested now.

Nelson, I did have a site server installed but when this imaging issue arised I removed the site server to make things simpler.

I do have a sneeking suspicion that i might have missed a component or something to make imaging work from my ns server.

Is their a way i can double-check that i have all the components on my ns server. will send through pics of my config later.

this install is in a test enviroment... need to decide if i'm moving from 6 to 7.1

How much memory does the VM have allocated?  WinPE needs at least 512K in my experience, so if you are running a minimalist VM, there may be insufficient available RAM for WinPE to work correctly.

the vm does have sufficient memory...

read in some of the forums that data execution prevention and uac could be root cause to all my problems...

so decided to wipe my server and start again...

i do remember these two components giving me problems with ns6 winpe aswell....

i'm going to remove data execution prevention total with bdcedit
