  • 1.  Imaging is so slow, how do i investigate?

    Posted Mar 15, 2016 11:51 AM

I'm running some testing of ghost in a all Vmware virtual environment.  Ghost is installed on server 2012R2 , with the DB on a seperate dedicated SQL server. PXE server is running on a DHCP server.  I am imaging a Windows 8.1 virtual workstation with a e1000 nic.  All machines are on the same VLAN and running on a VNX with 10K SAS with Fast Cache and VP running.  My image speeds are maxing out at around 175MB/Min.  Sooo slow.  I was looking for some advice on where to start investigating why this is so slow and possible fixes.

Step 1 is to see how fast the data transfer speed of the image file is in WIndows between the client and server.

Just copying the image.  Totatl image is ~ 15GB and runs at ~45MB/s so ~5 minutes.   I've been playing more with this and i can run up a few different workstations and if i see the speed is slow like i listed above I'll reboot and try again and it *sometimes will stay steady at a nice 1000MB/Min.  I cant find a ryhme or reason as to why, on one boot its slow and the next its fast.  Any ideas?

Can you set up Wireshark or some other network monitoring software to see what is going on in more detail?  There may be other traffic you are unaware of that is compromising your performance.  One thing you may wish to look at is whether your antivirus program is trying to scan the file transfer.

I'm not too familiar with the exacts of what i would need to configure for wireshark to monitor, but im certainly not opposed to trying.  I've removed any AV from the picture, so no AV is running.

I'll try moving this Ghost environmet to a comletey isolated network on the same ESX host and see if it occurs

What is the VMWare virtual environment ? Is it based on VMWare Workstation, or a flavour of ESX?

It may also be worth researching your issues via Google and on the VMWare website/forums as there may be some tweaks that your can apply at the VMWare level that will help with your performance issues.

Vsphere 6 with ESX 6 hosts.
