Hello ... Concern about why my system (XP SP3) is running so slowly. I think that the Symantec software is part of my problem (there are probably other things going on too). I am using Endpoint Protection (v. 11.0.4000.2295). For reasons that I don't understand my system starts hitting the disk constantly for minutes on end. I have installed File Monitor and find that very often when this happens one or several Symantec routines are issuing repeated disk requests ... RTVscan.exe and SmcGui.exe are the biggest culprits (SmcCorpUI.exe also gets into the act sometimes ... but less frequently than the others). One or both of these routines typically starts hitting the disk for long periods ... slowing down the whole system. SmcGui.exe usually cycles through seven operations: Open, Directory, Close on the folder C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\ then a Query Information on C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\SmcGui.exe and then Open, Directory, Close operations of C:\Program Files\. It does this over and over and over ... I have no idea why it does this. Rtvscan spends a LOT of time issuing reads on a file in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot\ directory. I don't understand why RtvScan runs so much ... I DO have auto protect on for mail, Outlook and file system but surely virus protection does not need to consume such a huge portion of the resource.

If you have any insight as to what is going on here ... and how I might relieve the impact that the Symantec software is having on my system I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks very much.

I would make certain that you meet and exceed the minimum requirements for the SEP client just for starters. Also a slow HD will do this with Outlook open.
