Importing and Exporting XML files in 7.1

Created: 15 Jun 2012 | 9 comments

Has anyone had any problems with exporting XML files from a 7.1 instance and importing them into another 7.1 instance?  We used this process to move development changes through our 7.0 environment stack.  We are migrating to 7.1 and I am finding that exporting XML files from a 7.0 OR a 7.1 instance yields inconsistent results.

We will get the following error mesage.

"Error importing item: web service error - ImportItem"

Any idea?

What happens if you import using importexportutil.exe, found at .\Notification Server\bin\Tools\importexportutil.exe?  Does it succeed or fail?

That should be the way to go if the xml is large, as console imports are only for small xml files, normally single items.

Let me try that and I will let you know.  We know the problem is not size, its almost as if it is seeing something in the XML that it doesnt like because the problem is inconsisten.

Stay Tuned.

That utility appears to work on 7.0, however on 7.1, it comes back with an error message stating that "This is not a Win32 Application", so I have escalated this problem with Symantec (unless you have some other ideas).

On all servers, are you logged on to the NS as an administrator on the box who is also a Symantec Administrator?

What kind of resource are you exporting/importing?

I don't recall what the actual limit is but I remember hitting that in our 6 environment.  There is some limit on the size of the XML you can import that is due to and IIS restriction.  Our work around was that I wrote a script that would look for XML files in a directory and it would use ImportExportUtil.exe.  only limitation was you had to make sure your parent folder GUIDs were in sync.  Otherwise you would have orphaned objects.

The limit that as noted by Symantec in 7.0 is 1,024KB.  I always took that into account in 7.0 and we never had a problem.  That however is not the problem in this case.  Some of these files are as small as 10k.  No, I think there is something more sinister going on here, like a major bug.

We are not doing anything process wise that we were not doing in 7.0.

Please provide the xml that you are trying to import.

The only time I have had problems is when trying to import a detailed MSD export.
