improving the time of backup in MS SQL 2005
Created: 27 Dec 2011 | 8 comments
Hi,
I have Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3 in Windows 2008 (64bit).
I have MS SQL 2005 on Windows 2008 running on Hyper-V.(OS - Windows 2008 (64bit)).
My database size is around 10 GB ist is taking 8 Minutes for a full backup.
Is it possible to improve the time of the backup windows.

Hello Mrinal,
8 Minutes for 10 GB database seems to be a good Job Rate. But still if you need to reduce the time window then check the Job log and see which process is taking longer time.
One thing you can try is to uncheck the option to perform Database Consistency Check which will not perform the consistency check of the databases before the backups.
Also turning OFF verification will save some time.
But be sure that its a HIGH RISK to turn off Database consistency and verification. These are just suggestions and not at all recommendations.
Again as said, 8 minutes for 10 GB is good job satisfactory job rate.
Thanks,

...you're suggesting that the OP turn off 2 checks that ensure that the data being written to tape/disk is consistent. Is that even a good idea to do so just to squeeze an extra couple of seconds out of a backup?

Exact figure...
Hi,
I have the excat figure of time and data.
It is 7.65 GB of full database with 3-4 database taking 9.13 Minute.
I have changed as u said , that is verifcation and other check and found that it is 8 minute of the same database size.
Thanks.

Hello Mrinal,
Then if the backups are going to tapes you can try to take it to disk.
Usually Disk backups are faster than tape backups (provided there is no issue with the disk).

What were the backup speeds
What were the backup speeds you were achieving earlier ?
It could be possible that BE is already performing at the capacity of the system....
Here is a guide to help you get started & see if throughput performance is indeed being hampered or not - http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH49521

...I'll be honest
...I'll be honest here...that's a great rate, and unless you were expecting much faster rates (say on a SAN), I would suggest leaving the speeds you are getting currently. You can MAYBE look at tuning your tape drive, as per a very good article written by pkh on the link below:
https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/tuning-my-lto4-tape-drive
This is no guarantee that you will get significant speed, but you might see an increase.
If you find this is a solution, please mark it as such.
