I am trying to find the number of clients with specific Microsoft applications installed on them to ensure compliance with our License Agreement.

When I run reports, such as Application Discovery Summary, I am given a list of applications and the total count of machines the application is installed on. Example: Microsoft Office 2007 Professional Plus is installed on 1308 machines.

Then I create a collection with a filter for Microsoft Office 2007 listed in the Add/Remove Programs list. The total number of machines automatically included in that collection is 1127 machines.

Then I run the report for "Count of Distinct Add/Remove Program Applications" and the total number of occurrences for Microsoft Office 2007 Professional Plus is listed at 1246.

I've run the reports against the same collection, "All Computers". I'm asked by my supervisor for a number of machines with a specific application installed on it and I can never feel completely confident in my answer because I have all of these different numbers being given.

What can I do to make these reports more accurate? Maintenance of any sort or anything? I understand that they may be off by 10 or 20 and I'm fine with that, but varying by 100 or 200 isn't acceptable. (at least in my bosses eyes.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Go with "Count of Distinct Add/Remove Program Applications", that's the one I trust.

One important thing to point out, as Dan has in the past, is that different reports pull from different tables. So the results in the "Discovery" report would most certainly always have different results that the "Count" report.
