Index data clean up

Does anyone have any smart and easy ways of clearing up old Index data?
We currently have 5.5TB of indexes (replicated), huge amounts of these belong to the many thousands of old archives that are no longer in use and most likely, will never ever be used again.
Whilst we need to keep the archives, we could certainly mark their indexes as offline, and delete the index data until such times as it might ever be needed again.
Obviously we can trawl through archive by archive and do this, but its a huge task. I'd love to hear any smart ways of easing this process, or even automating it?

I would not recommend this,
I would not recommend this, but here is a way you could go about this... Again I state do not do this.....
1) Identify all Terminated Uses.
2) Make sure the mailbox is disabled.
3) Remove permissions on Archive (ZAP)
4) Possibly change the Archive from a Normal Archive to a Shared Archive
5) Set the index to Failed in the Database
6) Get the Index Location from the Database on all the Indexes you have set to failed
7) From the above list write a script to go and delete the index data
