Tyson,
I ran into the same issue for quite a few times around and there's a few different solutions I've learned on dumping the DB's but the method that worked for me was when I was uninstalling 12.5, there is a prompt asking if you would like to delete the additional user settings & files (jobs, etc.) and I selected no.  I had to reinstall 12.5, uninstall it and when prompted again, hit yes to remove the files.  Reboot, retry 2010 install and voila, good to go.

Hope this helps.

I'm guessing that this new version has a different database schema then the old version. You uninstalled your old version of BE but probably didn't uninstall the SQL instance or drop the DB. If you do that you will, of course, lose any backup history, jobs etc etc. Once the upgrade version is out it should take care of this issue

Sorry for catching this thread so late.  It sounds like you were atempting to use an existing SQL server (the full version) as your database repository on a remote system?  Or was this the error you recieved when you atempted to use the default SQL Express database on the same machine you were installing the Backup Exec media server?

Hi, yes you're correct with

Hi, yes you're correct with the configuration.

The media server is a VM running 2008 R2 Enterprise. I also installed Backup Exec 2010 beta on a Windows XP SP3  and also go the error message as well. Additionally when I tried the job again I got -

"e000ff15 - A communications failure has occurred with a System State resource. " It ran for almost 5 hours and only got to 217,040,273 bytes.

Also, when I'm trying to backup "Microsoft Hyper-V HA Virtual Machines" it is failing as well with the following error message -

"e000fe30 - A communications failure has occurred.
For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-65072"

Right now I'm trying to backup the VM by just using the ClusterStorage and selecting the folders and it seems to be working, or at least it's gotten to verify. Something that should also be noted is that within "Microsoft Hyper-V HA virtual machine" I can expand all of the VM's EXCEPT the one DC that is having problems.

[UPDATE: The Backup using "ClusterStorage" and just selecting the folders manually completed HA Hyper-V VM backup job succesfully]

Andy

Hi Tyson -

Actually, we don't use a VCB Proxy server any more with Backup Exec 2010.  Because of this, backups are direct-from-storage rather than stored to a temp location then backed up like it is in BE 12.5.

This is part of our integration with the vStorage API from VMWare.

Lack of upgrade support

One of the largest blockers for us is that Symantec always blocks upgrades in the beta versions of BackupExec that they release to testers. This causes us a great deal of lost time each beta cycle removing the old version, deleting SQL, re-installing and most time consuming is re-configuration of all our backup jobs, media, selection lists, etc, etc, etc.. If Symantec wants serious testing, you should release a public RC tht will allow upgrades to us testers. Yes, we are willing to risk it and those of us that do that should be expected to take the proper precautions. As a professional, I don't appreciate being blocked from operations which need to be tested fully before release of the product !!

Hi, I installed the Beta, so

Hi,

I installed the Beta, so far so good. However, I have one issue. In installing the trial, although I can pick and choose the options and agents to install, it seems to actually install them all. So in reality I can't test as I would in production.

I'm testing the Hyper V agent on Windows 2008 R2, and I'm certain some of the options should be greyed out if not licensed.

At least that was the case in the past versions I thought. I did not install Exchange or SQL or many of the other options, but they are all able to be picked in the settings section of the backup job. And many more options also appear in the View by resource pane.

Can anything be done?

Thanks

Working as Designed for the Beta

Hello Roger -

Turns out I was incorrect - this is indeed working as designed in the Early Adopter build.

We're looking to do it differently in the future - expose only those functions that are licensed - but that facility won't be in the BE 2010 release.

I have this beta installed on

I have this beta installed on Windows 2008 R2 Standard Edition Media Server.

Currenlty due to Backup Exec 12.5 haveing no support for Media Server in 200R2 and Windows dropping tape support, this server is not being backed up. I knw that a beta install should not be used in Production, however, I've tested and restored the backup on this several times and It's working flawlessly.

My question is, when the trial ends, will I be able to do an in place upgrade to the licensed version? Or will I need to uninstall and re-install the new version? No that it matters much, but it would be great if I had to not do anything and just enter the license keys.

Liveupdate Install

Hello,

Beta install went fine on a Windows 2008 server but after completing the install there are 3 checkboxes I believe for Run Liveupdate check, Read the Readme and Launch Backup Exec.  I left the Liveupdate checked and the install exited.  I then ran BE 2010 and went to tools liveupdate and it stated LiveUpdate wasn't installed.  I then browsed the installation folder and found the Liveupdate install, ran it, and now it runs a Liveupdate.  Is this designed this way because it's a beta release and no updates will be made available?

Hello nkrowe - We do not support deduplication to tape in Backup Exec 2010.

If you set copy data from a deduplication storage folder to a tape, we will "hydrate" or un-deduplicate the data in-line as it is transferred to the tape.

 You cannot go directly from

You cannot go directly from the original source to tape. You have to stage to disk first (called a Deduplication Storage Folder) on the media server and then you can do a duplicate job to tape which, as Aidan said, 're-hydrates' the backup set so that the data can be restored later directly from tape without any reliance upon other sources of backup or storage indexes or sets (which could otherwise lead to VERY lengthy restore times or easily corrupted/unusable backups sets on tape).

It's the same as any other

It's the same as any other backup stored on tape. With a new BE install you would need to:
1. inventory the tape (and any other tapes that it may have had to span to)
2. Catalog the tape (this figures out what sets are stored on the tape(s))
3. Create a restore and have fun watching the data stream back :)

You can dedupe to a disk

You can dedupe to a disk storage location.  You can create one Deduplicated Storage Folder per media server.

When you move data to tape, the data is moved to that tape "rehydrated" or undeduplicated.

Cannot create deduplication storage folder

Hi,

I am trying to create a deduplication storage folder using the Configure Devices Assistant.  After clicking Deduplication Storage Folder the only setting I change on the New Deduplication Storage Folder is the storage path.  After clicking OK I get the Gather information pop-up, after about 15-30 seconds I get an error message that says "An error occurred while creating the deduplcation storage folder." If I navigate to the location that I set in the assistant a bunch of folders have been created.  There is also an error in the application event log which I have pasted below.  The directory the error referenced does exist.

Combine Deduplication with VMware Agent

vstorage agent shouldn't use network

The vstorage agent should be backing up over the SAN not over the network,s o the subnet shouldn't affect the speed. Other factors will -- disk, memory, cpu on your media server.

I have a question regarding the GRT backups and restores for the MS Virtual Agent.

I have done complete backups and restores wihtout an issue.

however, when going to restore individual files it says I must have a remote agent installed.

Can I install the remote agent after the fact for the restore or did it have to be installed prior to the backup.

The backup completed fine, restored fine, but only doing a grt resotre does it tell me I need the remote agent installed.

You need to have the GRT

You need to have the GRT option checked in the Backup Job for the "Microsoft Hyper-V" settings and the Remote Agent does need to be installed on that VM ahead of time. Installing it afterwards will not help. Can you verify whether that Hyper-V GRT checkbox was on by looking at the job setup? If it was on and the job was successful we may need to get a copy of the job log and a debug to check things out.

I tested this myself, and

I tested this myself, and your answer was incorrect. I attempted the restore of a single file without the Remote Agent installed. As expected the restore failed. I installed the remote agent after the fact and restored a single file. It worked like a champ.

So the answer is, in order to restore single files on a server the remote agent can be installed after the fact.

This is a big savings in not having to buy the remote agent for servers that you may never install a single file on, but nice to know it can be done.

Thanks

Roger, Sorry I didn't read

Roger,

Sorry I didn't read you post correctly.  If you have GRT selections (individual files) then installing the remote agent after the fact will work as you saw in testing.

As for not having to buy the remote agents, with the hyper V license, you get RAWS for free for all the guests on that host.  So you don't have to buy an additional license.  But any apps that you wish to use GRT with, like Exchange or SQL will require an additional license.

To further expand, I was incorrect on my prior answer in regards to "file" GRT but not Exchange/SQL GRT. I still haven't gotten used to calling the File stuff GRT, so used to thinking of it in terms of DB's. So sorry about that. There is metadata needed for the Exchange & SQL database structures that can only be grabbed via our Remote Agent at the backup time from our installed Remote Agent. The VMware VDDK cannot provide that meta-data through the host.

Same problem on different target disks

I'm not sure I understand your first question.  The error seems to be generated by the target side. I've tried 2 different drives and formatted them several times.  Originally, I had a 800GB disk on the SAN as my target dedupe folder. After the failed backup I had about 760 GB free.  After these errors, I was able to perform other backups.  If the source-side had less than 50GB to backup, it would be successful. If it's more, it fails everytime.  I'm also able to do a backup of the local box (admin/media server) which is over 50GB.

Suspecting that iSCSI may be the issue, I then tried formatting a local disk to use as my target dedupe folder.  This drive was 255GB, with 215GB free after a failed backup attempt.  Changing the target drive to a local drive didn't change anything. It still errors out at about 50GB of processed data from the source-side with the same error.

When you create a job that targets the media server's 'Deduplication Storage Folder' there is an option (checkbox) that talks about using 'Direct Access'. With this checked, the source side will attempt to do the Deduplication work and only the 'new' data gets sent across the wire (you have to have pushed the remote agent after installing the Dedup option and only that one server's selections can be in the job). If you uncheck the 'direct access' checkbox then the media server does the deduplication work so most of the data is still sent across the wire but we only store the 'new' data to the Dedup folder. This is what I thought you were talking about when you said target side verssus source side dedup.

That being said, I did find out that we have recently addressed issues that should have resolved this problem (a variation of the problem/error was being seen) and we are definitely not seeing the 50+ GB issue in current builds being tested by our Quality Assurance team.

Question on how to run a duplicate tape job from a dedupe job

Can someone explain the step for creating a duplicate tape job from a dedupe to disk job?

Same as other duplicate operations

It's pretty much the same process as any other duplicate job but the media is stored in the Dedup storage folder instead of in a Backup-to-Disk folder or tape drive/library. Should be fairly transparent. The main difference in the operation is that it can take longer than the original job since it has to re-hydrate all of the data into the tape.

Are you trying to duplicate

Are you trying to duplicate and protect just one backup set to tape or the whole entire Deduplication Storage Folder? There are two different processes.

Protect one backup set.  Same as you would with tape just a disk copy.  I would like to keep 5 days of copies on disk like you would with VTL.

BE 2010 includes support for a media server install on Windows 2008 R2. However, Windows 7 will be only supported via the remote agent. Windows XP will still support the full media server.

Can you have the DLO backup folder be dedupe?

Can the DLO folder where all the DLO backups are stored be deduped?  So if two users have the same document, it is only backed up once.

I'll have to double check,

I'll have to double check, but I'm pretty sure DLO and dedupe do not work together at this point.

Thanks

I think he is asking if the

I think he is asking if the Beta version will be upgradeable to the final released version of 2010. This has my curiousity as well since I to have Windows 2008 R2 Servers in production that need backed up.

Personally I feel that Symantec has let us down with not providing an update for 12.5 Media Server to install on 2008 R2.

OK, So if the beta won't be

OK,

So if the beta won't be upgradable then I'll have to unistall the Beta trial and install the full version then.

Since 12.5 does not work on this server, I have no ability to upgrade. I need to do a full install. The beta works and is my only option to upgrade at this time. So I will have no choice I guess but to uninstall the trial version and re-install the full version since it appears there will be no way to just install the keys.

Will there be any issues with this?

Thanks

Roger,

At this time there are no issues with uninstalling one version of 2010 and then installing a later version.
