** We have Back-Up Exec 6.9 and SMP with Client management 7.1

I have been training and learning how to use SMP with the Client management Suite. I have a trial license and need to prove this software is worth the money we shelled out for training and the money we're going to use to buy CMS. I need to prove to our "talking heads" this is a good investement for our corporation.

I'm understanding the whole application packaging and file and folder copying processes, and I have got it working well in a test environment. But here is where the collective genius of the forum will help me. If ever I need to uninstall the software installed with Back-Up Exec 6.9:

1.) How do I uninstall the software?

2.) We also have Client management Suite running side by side with this. Can I use 7.1 to uninstall the software?

In the case of the installation, the software was installed by another admin and i dont thinnk he did the installation right. I know there is a way to include the software in the add/remove programs list and use add/remove software to uninstall it, if need be. How do I create this  option in my software packages to avoid this issue in the future? Thank you very much!

I'm not familiar with BESR versions.  Is this the one that's part of BESR Integration Component, which ties the product into the Symantec Management Console?

I'm assuming that you have BESR installed on the server, and the Symantec Management Platform (SMP), and BESR Integration Component, and CMS.. and that you want to strip this down to just BESR.  If you were just demonstrating the capabilities of BESRIC and CMS, you'll use the Symantec Installation Manager (SIM) and uninstall BESRIC, then uninstall the CMS suite, then uninstall the platform.

If you want to save your settings, but you want to be using a different server, you would perform a migration.  If you host SQL on-box, you would detach, copy, and reattach the CMDB SQL database on your new server, then configure the platform and solutions (to match exactly your old server) through SIM, using the existing database.  If you host SQL off-box, simply connect to it while running SIM on the new server.  You'll need to redirect the agents.

Without hearing the details, I'm guessing it would be better to set up an entirely new server, then simply uninstall and leave behind everything but BESR on the old server -- if indeed BESR was installed there.

I may have mis-spoken somewhere. My apologies. I was referring to desktop software installed with Back up Exec 6.9.

When one of our application managers attempted to un-installed said software, she was unable to because the software was not in the add/remove programs list where she normally found it.

To un-install this software. Could I use CMS 7.1 to un-install this software as it currenty stands? OR do I need to create a new un-install job in Back Exec 6.9? I'm sure I can find the installation job in BE 6.9. Much thanks for the reply.

Yes.  If it was installed with an MSI, just use the msiexec.exe /x {MSI product code} to do an uninstall.  The same would hold true for uninstall commands for an .exe.  If it requires scripting, that can be incorporated into a job as well.

If it's a true one-off, I would just remote into the desktop and remove it using one of the methods mentioned above.  Any time I'll be doing something on two or more systems, I automate it.
