Installing Deployment Solutions 7.1

Created: 15 Jan 2013 • Updated: 24 Jan 2013 | 7 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

I installed the trial version of DS 7.1 this past summer and was pleased with how it worked (A little quirky but nothing to terriable) so we went ahead and bought licenses for DS for Clients.

I competely wiped the server I had it installed on to start from scratch (I prefer doing a production machine this way to get rid of any possiable legacy issues) but I am now having major issues trying to install the software packaged.

Server is Win2K8 R2 with SQL server 2008SP1 installed

First problem.
I went to Symantecs website and clicked on the link to download Deployment Solutions for Clients 7.1 and let it download the latest version of the SIM.  Once SIM is running I don't see Deployment solutions for Clients anywhere in the list of products I can download.  I turned off all the filters.  I decided to try downloading Deployment Solution Complete Suite to see if that included the Deployment Solution for Clients (If it does it would be VERY helpful to document that SOMEWHERE)  Is this what I need to install??

Second problem.

I went thru the system check and made sure everything I needed to have installed was installed (All green and happy) but when I try to install the DS Complete suite I get an error saying that it's installed but not configured properly (Could be the SQL server) I may need to manually configure it.

The SQL server is up and running just fine.  I am sure there is something that I am just missing (It's basically a default install of SQL server) I can't find anything that will allow me to configure it manually or any logs that tell me exactly what the problem may be (I look at the logs but all it says is it can't talk to the SQL server)

Is there an installation walk thru somewhere (With step by step instructions on what needs to be configured and how??)

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated (I feel like I am banging my head against the wall)

Thanks!!

I have seen the guide before but unless I am missing something that just tells me how to use it once it's installed (After I get thru updating Java on 500+ machines today I can take a closer look.  The Boss just stopped by and told me I need to help update Java thruout the college)

What I really need help with is installing it (I don't remember it being this difficult this past summer when I installed it the first time but Deployment Solutions for Clients was one of the options in SIM back then)

The SQL server is 2008 SP3 and is basically a vanilla install of SQL server (Is there something that needs to be configured in SQL server to add a database for DS??  Does the DS install automate this or do I have to configure it manually)

Thanks so much for your help!!

If you use Windows authentication when installing SIM and DS, then the application identity you specified for the install will be used to authenticate to SQL and create the database.  That account needs to have sa rights on the SQL server in order to create the database.  If you chose SQL login, then the local SQL login you created in SQL Studio needs to have sa rights for the same reason.

This is also the likely reason you saw that DS solution was installed but not configured correctly.  Whenever you do an install or upgrade and see "The solution is installed, but not configured correctly.  Click Reconfigure..", it's almost always a SQL permissions issue.

Also, an article provides a walkthrough of the install, if that helps:

Sorry, it's been a while since I tried installing that.  The only problem I ran into when 7.x first came out was that you couldn't have a service pack on Windows 2008 Server.  I spent a lot of time going back and forth trying to figure that out.  I eventually got it working though after having to re-install the server like three times.

We ended up sticking with DS 6.9 because the feature set of 7.x wasn't quite there yet.  We are waiting for the release of 7.5 before we make the jump.

Also, if you just bout the licensing, you might contact your Symantec rep, many times, they have an engineer that can assist in your installation, especially seeing as their software isn't exactly the cheapest out there.

Hello,

First sorry if my question may sound stupid but is a ness before installing DS.

After Sim was installed did we install also Symantec Management Platform. That is the core of everything.

Formerly known as Notification Server.

Also did you wipe the old SQL DB before installing the new DS.

Check if in DB we have Symnatec_CMDB and when was it created.

That was indeed the problem (Figured it out eventually)

Since I ONLY wanted the DS part and nothing else (That's all we are licensed for anyway) I was only choosing the DS in the SIM

When I chose the DS intallation it was also installing the Managment Platform BUT it wasn't installing it correctly apparently (Or at least it wasn't working)

I was unaware that it HAD to be installed first (Didn't find anything saying this by the way) and was under the impression that everything was kosher after the install check for DS came up completely green (No issues)

Perhaps this needs to be changed?? Or maybe an install document created on how to install the Deployment Solution (I know this may seem like a stupid thing to get hung up on and with hind sight being what it is it's kind of obvious but at the time it wasn't)
