  • 1.  Installing multiple instances of Symantec Scan Engine in the Same Host

    Posted Aug 01, 2012 05:17 AM

I am trying to install two instances of Symantec Scan Engine ( SSE )  in the same host. First instance of installation went well fine, while installing the second instance of SSE in the same host, I am seeing a message as seen in listing 1.

Has any one tried installing multiple instances of SSE in the same host ? If so, please share the details.

Is there a work-around for this issue ?

Listing 1 : Extract from Symantect Installation log

System already loaded with latest release of ScanEngine.  Exiting.

There is no practical reason to install two instances of Scan Engine on the same machine. The product is multi-threaded and you can increase the number of scan threads if needed.

    Hi JDavis,

    Thanks for your inputs.

We are planning to have multiple instances of Symantec Scan Engine ( SSE ) to make use of the load-balancing feature of Symantec API.

The recommended maximum thread count for a SSE is 512, to have more threads available for scanning - we are planning to have multiple instances of SSE.

Instead of hosting multiple instances of SSE in different hosts, we are trying to host multiple instances in a single host.

While trying this out we are facing the issue as described in the problem statement. Is there a workaround for this ?

I understand you are looking to have multiple processes of SSE running at the same time on one computer.  Unfortunately SSE does not support that type of deployment.

To use the load balancing feature you must deploy SSE on multiple computers.

    Hi Ben,

    Thanks for the details !

It would have been nice if SSE supported this kind of installation, hope to see this in next releases !

Just go here: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/node/add/idea?add_context=691 and submit your idea.  The Product Managers look at those for things to include in future releases.
