Installing NS 6

jfrasier's picture

I downloaded NS 6 and tried to install it on a Windows 2008 server. It said I needed IIS minimum version 5. I installed version 7. Then when I tried to install NS again it said, "Failed to check IIS version, Error--2147221020". What I do about that?

I also wanted to install Helpdesk solution on the same server so I tried that instead of NS first. I was actually on the server, not a remote connection, but when it was checking the requirements it said I could not install it remotely and it indicated that I was running Windows 2000 which would not work. I was running Windows 2008.

Can someone help me? I phoned support and waited 20 minutes on hold, then got cut off right after I gave my name. I tried to enter a support request but couldn't because I didn't have any of the numbers they wanted. I have been at this all day.

Thanks.

Not supported

Notification Server 6 and Notification Server 7 are supported on Windows Server 2008 which is the reason for the error message.  The supported versions are Server 2000 and Server 2003 for NS6

Typo I think...

I think what he is trying to say is that running NS 6 or 7 is not yet supported on server 2008. NS 6 I think will never be supported, but NS 7 will be supported as of SP1 I believe. That will released be after this summer.

The manuals.. they must be around here somewhere :)

I hate to sound like a broken record, but the release notes are very specific about what software versions are supported for installation of Altiris\Symantec products. I've always found it funny that software installs will generate cryptic\wrong messages (like the Windows 2000 error you saw), however as it's been mentioned above, you'll have to stick with Windows 2003\SQL 2005 for now.

Also, Helpdesk 7 (renamed to Service Desk) is not out yet, so if you are looking at Helpdesk as being your primary driver, you'll have to go with NS6 or wait for the summer\fall release of Service Desk.

Thanks for the information.

Thanks for the information. Here is my communication with a sales person that assured me 2008 was fine. I will have to have my network guy rebuild that server back to Server 2003 I guess.

Can Deployment Solution, Helpdesk solution and Notification Server be installed on a Windows Server 2008 computer?

To clarify

Deployment Server 6.9 - the full win32 version, can be installed on Windows 2008.

Deployment Solution and Helpdesk Solution (amongst many others), all require Notification Server, which will not run on Windows 2008.
