  • 1.  Intel iMac Windows XP SP2 - UuID problem?

We have two labs of Intel iMacs (core 2 duo, with Marvell Yukon Gigabit adapters), running Windows XP SP2 (it turned out it was cheaper to buy the Apple gear than the equivalent Dell offering!)

The problem we're having took me ages to work out - my test machine kept disappearing from the console. I added/removed the client, rebooted the test machine and the ghost server, thought the db was corrupt, and then eventually checked ngserver.log - the server was receiving status messages from the client, but it wasn't showing up as a GUI icon the the default machine group.

I even moved the client (swapping pubkey.crt) to refer to our other campus' ghost server - success, it shows up, so local client config is fine, and the two ghost servers are identical apart from geographical location (they're VMware images of each other).

It turns out either of our ghost server's consoles are only showing ONE of any of our iMacs. Looking at the ngserver.log file shows they're all sending status messages, but the seem to share the same "UUID" - 0x9C 0xFE 0x24 0x5E 0xD0 0xC8 0xBD 0x45 0xA7 0x9F 0x54 0xEA 0x5F 0xBD 0x3D 0x97. I guess this is why I can only see one machine at a time in the GUI?

The Intel iMacs won't boot from a DOS partition, so I can't automate imaging from the ghost console for them. Instead, we boot from a bartPE disk and image them via a ghostcast session and then vbscript the other functions, such as SSID change and machine rename (using newsid.exe from sysinternals), and domain join. The only other useful console feature at the moment then is using AI Builder to send application updates - but now I can't even do that due to the UUID problem (and for our other DELL machines, I still have an AI builder issue - see other post - http://forums.symantec.com/discussions/thread.jspa?threadID=73601&tstart=0).

In short, is there any fix I can use to overcome this issue - I notice there may be another non-released build which may help? Also, is there any work in the pipeline to support Apple intel hardware in a more integrated fashion in the future (at least for MS OS installs - eg support for GPT etc?)

    thanks.. I hope..
