Intuit TurboTax 2008

I've been putting TurboTax in a layer since tax year 2005. TT is a perfect use case for SVS, as it's transitory software (generally, use once for a few days or weeks and then you want to remove it). Not to mention that keeping old versions archived in VSAs means you can quickly go back to an old TT file should you need to -- Not an easy thing w/o SVS, as a friend of mine recently discovered when needing to access a lifetime of old .TAX files and discovered they are essentially worthless w/o the version of TT each was created with.

However, much to my dismay, I was unable to capture TT 2008. The install kept halting with a Windows Installer error that said "unable to delete a registry key" or something of that nature. I tried it first on my packaging VM, but also on my main laptop. Same error on both. Trying global capture just makes the error come up later in the process. Installs ok to base.

Has anyone else run into this problem? Do you have a solution? TIA!

Hi Scott,

Could you provide us the log lines around the error.

Specify cmd as the program to capture (as you didn't know ) and then add "msiexec /i <path to msi>/L*v C:\verbose.log".

Now just go through the capture and when you're done with the failing capture open the verbose.log file and:

search for "return value 3"

post the 10 lines above and below that search hit.
