I am not sure if this is

I am not sure if this is possible.  The inventory for the monitors is using WMI, I am guessing win32_DesktopMonitor, which is dependent on driver extensions.  If the drivers for the monitor are not loaded or are loaded in a non-standard way, WMI won't see them.  There are some scripts available that query the registry and EDID (Extended Display Identification Data), but I don't know how you could integrate that complexity into a custom inventory piece.

Hope that helps at least a little.

Explain where you looked for

Explain where you looked for the monitor inventory.  I would like to hear where in the Altiris console you looked.  If you attempted to look in the right place, we can help you.  If you are just fishing and making comments without merit, we can not.

There are several tables that might help

On the Resource manager for a machine, on the Inventory tab, check out Inventory > Hardware > AeX HW Monitor, or AeX HW Video Monitor.  The only problem is HW Video Monitor records any monitor which was ever connected (including "ghost" devices you can see in Device Manager if you enable "Show hidden devices"), and AeX HW Monitor shows some strange entries as well.  These can be added in a report as columns from the Inv_AeX_HW_Monitor or Inv_AeX_HW_Video_Monitor tables.

Integration Component of HW Supplier

for Fujitsu Siemens Computers for example you can get a Solution called DeskView, which is able to detect the connected monitors precisely. I don't exactly know if this is also possible with the Solutions priovided for HP and Dell boxes.

There used to be a Phillips

There used to be a Phillips solution that plugged into NS also that would gather this.  It looks like it is still available:
http://www.solutionsam.com/Solutions/6_0/altiris_philipsassetmanagement_6_1.exe

To get to this from the Solution Center ("Upgrade/Install Additional Solutions") you need to go to the U/I AS tool, select "Segments" on the Available Solutions tab, then expand "Partner Solutions".   Philips SmartManage Administrator will be listed.  Not sure if there is a license associated with this or not; IIRC it was a free license but you had to notify Altiris that you wanted/needed it so they could give you the license file.  The description suggests that it only works with Philips monitors, but I seem to recall seeing screenshots of managing non-Philips displays as well.  The manageability functions were reduced however on non-Philips screens.  Also this hasn't been upgraded in quite some time (March 2006) so YMMV...

I know this is old, but. . . .

I hate bringing old threads up from the grave like this, but in case you're still struggling with this I was able to create a custom inventory to consistently return monitor serial numbers.  I came across this thread initially when I was researching the issue.  Here is the link to my updated custom Inventory:
