  • 1.  Inventory central storage folder/path

    Posted Jun 27, 2011 10:09 PM

I am trying to gather basic inventory from userA and full inventory from userB, then by comparing the total size of their own inventory file/folder on my server.

    1) Where do their inventory reports stored?

    2) Or should I assume they are all combined within my altirisdb.mdf?..

    3) I was exploring this path "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Inventory" on an agent and the relative size was 2.5MB. Is this what I am looking for?

The purpose of finding out the size of the inventory report is to decide whether we should allow a full inventory report sending from out of country. And at this point we are only targeting less than 5 frequent travelers.

    Please advise.

    Hi Jacky,

You can enable logging of the Inventory data by setting the EventCaptureFolder registry value (see KB article HOWTO4986 for details) to a local folder on the machine, then run the Inventory jobs.  The inventory is really very small, and the files on disk are not a good representation as they are compressed (so long as you have this enabled in your Agent configuration, which it is by default).  Being basically text (err, XML) they compress quite well.  I can tell you we have over 18000 workstations in NA, and manage about 6000 in EMEA and Brazil, and have no problems with bandwidth/network due to Inventory.

If you want to concern yourself with using bandwidth, you may want to look more closely at the throttling settings for software package (including patches) downloading.  This is much more impactful to the network than simple Inventory collection.  Proper placement of Site Servers can help too for remote sites (and a SS that is linked to the IP subnets used by your VPN client).
