Inventory problem

    Hello,

We have been having this problem since the installation of Altiris, it might be something that I have yet to understand correctly but would appreciate your input.

We have pushed out the agent to all of our machines and the have since received the "sub-agents / plugins" from the site server within a couple of hours. This works fine, if you visit the machine then you can see the sub agents are present by clicking on the "Setting" button of the agent. The trouble is that it takes 24 hours before the Site Server receives the inventory telling it that the "sub-agents / plugins" are install, during this down time it is impossible to push software deployment tasks as the site server correctly says the machine doesn't have the necessary "sub-agents / plugins" available.

I have read a bit on the internet and it seemed that we could manually speed this up by forcing the client to send their inventory to the console, but unfortunately this doesn't seem to make any different to how long the site server takes to relaise that the client actually has the "sub-agents / plugins" installed.

Where the whole thing gets a little more confusing for me is that I believe this is an internal service on the site server as if I push the "sub-agents / plugins" and then turn the computer off (so their is no communication with the site server) then it still takes 24 hours to get the inventory, so it seems the information had been sent to the site server just not processed.

I hope this explains the problem, if you need any more details then please do post back...!

I would like to know if this is by design? and if so is there a work around to force the console to update the inventory.

    Thanks,

whenever a new sub agent is installed. Thuis goes back to the Notification Server though, the local Site Server isn't involved in sending Inventory, Basic Inventory from the Symantec Management Agent or Inventory Solution Agent Inventory.

Check on the Agent when Basic inventory was last sent.

Then check Resource Explorer on the NS for the target computer to see if the Basic Inventory is getting updated in a timely manner (should only take a few minutes).

If it's not, check your evet queues.

If it is then your filter update interval may be set too long, I'm not sure if this affects how the NS thinks sub agents have been installed or not.

    Thanks for your response.

The agent does say that inventory was succesfully sent to the notifcation server, and the resource manager show that same date and time under the field "Last Basic Inventory Received", so I am pretty sure that the inventory is updating.

If I look in the Resource Manager under the "Symantec Management Agent Details" tab I cannot see all of hte agents that are installed on the machine (although I am sure as they appear if a click Settings on the agent directly on the machine)

There are no events in the queue,

I have been playing with a ask to update filters but although it runs succesfully it doesn't seem to have any affect on whether or not the NS can see the plug ins....

    Thanks,

and the time the Basic Inventory is shown as sent. Maybe the sub agents that aren't showing in Resource Manager are installing after the last basic Inventory has been sent.

If Resource Manager isn't showing the sub agents in Basic Inventory then updating filters will have no effect.

I thought that Basic Inventory was sent after every sub agent install but it may be sent after every agent restart and perhaps not all the sub agents are restarting the agent.

Thank you for your response, I  am sorry it has taken so long to get back to you.

I have check in time and even though the time is very recent the agents still do not appear in the list on the Site Server.

The thing that I find intersting is that if I find a machine with the sub agents installed and check in time on the server shows that it has cheked in since the sub agents were installed (but the agents do not show on the Site Server). If I then turn this machine OFF totally and leave it for 24 hours (OFF) then after 24 hours the console then shows that the sub agents are installed, for me this says that it is something that runs every 24 hours on the Site Server to make this information appear?

    Thanks,

Inventory last sent. The Inventory data, basic inventory or full inventory shown in Resource Explorer is not affected by filters or filter updates.

    Hi,

I have checked the check in times and the basic inventory times and they are both recent but still the console refuses to show that the client has the sub agent isntalled unril 24 hours afterwards.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks again for your help...

What are your resource membership update times set to?

    Is setup for Daily.

I thought of this and so have run it manually and this makes no difference?

    Thanks,

console refuses to show that the client has the sub agent isntalled

From the "Resource Manager" (RM) or a "filter", or a "target" ?

    which one, named ?

If RM or AC (Activity Center: Silverlight console) shows agents correctly installed: the CMDB and the agent are OK.

If a filter do not show the machine: Click update on the filter, still not there ?

Verify content this filter, does it includes other filters, check them same way. click update on them...

In final, probably a SQL query provided: Does running this query returns the machine correctly ?

    Tell us what result is.

I cannot see the agents in RM.

Waiting 24 hours fixs the problem - even if the client machine is not turned on.

I will image another machine to repeat the problem and then try running a SQL query to see if the DB holds different data to RM.

    Thanks,
