Inventory Task Crashing Altiris Agent on Vista?

jckelchl's picture

Shiney new NS with CMS 7 SMS 7 and Dell Client Manager.

The Install went smooth enough and things appear to behave well except for the inventory plug-in as soon as an inventory task is assigned to the vista client the agent goes boom.

All other task seem to work fine.

thoughts?

Me too

I'm also having this issue. If anyone has made any headway with it I'd be glad to hear about it.

Known Issue

According to the knowledge base, this is a known issue and the Symantec support team is investigating:
https://kb.altiris.com/article.asp?article=46615&p=1

Has anyone opened a support case with Symantec with this issue and provided the information needed.  Luckily, we are not running vista on any machines yet, so I have not experienced this issue.

Additional Information

 Hi Everyone,

At this stage i m convinced that the issue is not purely vista-related as i have seen the same behavior on other OS and therefore fully agree with what KB46615 states.

However the issue is still unknown. Having gone trough several memory dump analysis nothing interesting came out from it that could determine the cause except that ntdll.dll containing kernel functions is involved when the crash occurs.

Running a task inventory 7 on a fresh installation of XP SP2, Vista SP1 and Vista SP2 has just gone fine for me.

Therefore, still thinking that it is not completely system-related but application-related i have performed further tests and started by installing `Microsoft Office 2007'  on a Vista SP2 box. Then i opened the Symantec  Management Console, run an Inventory Task and guess what ??? CRASH.

I uninstalled MS Pack Office 2007, restarted the box then run the inventory task again and guess what ??? no crash !!!! I then reinstalled  `Microsoft Office 2007' but only 'Microsoft Access' component without any other component or tool, run the inventory task again and again crashed the Altiris agent.

All this leads me to think that Frameworks as DotNet or Core Services as MSXML might be involved in the crash.

Still investigating.......

Keep you posted

Same here, seems to be

Same here, seems to be spreading 1-2 weeks after our CMS7 rollout.  Only affecting Vista SP1 clients though.  I've logged a case with Symantec and sent the requested crashdumps.
