How many ip addresses would be required by a MS 2000 cluster in active/passice mode running a exchange on one node and a single file source on the other node

cluster means that you have 2

cluster means that you have 2 physical servers that appear as 1 big server on the network.
Depending on the way that you use cluster( You can have them both active in the same time or in fail over configuration) you will need however 1 ip assigned to each network card and an extra ip that will be configured as the public ip (the one that's valid for the "big" server.

The clients will not see the ip assigned to each network card but these are necessary to be in the same class with your public ip.
