Issue Inventory Tapes In Backup Exec Version 12 Rev 1364

Created: 02 May 2013 | 8 comments

I am having an issue where I cannot inventory tapes in Backup Exec.  When I put the tape in the tape drive when from within Backup Exec when I select the tape drive and right click and select Inventory nothing happens.

I have seen where a message in the job status under job monitor to say that "Communication Stalled"  The only way to get around this issue is to restart the Backup Exec services.  When this happens the tape will appear.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to a fix to this issue.

Many thanks in advance.

Al.

Hi,

Try Pause/Unpause of the server in the Devices tab. Then run the Inventory job again.

Also make sure that BE is fully patched with the latest SP and additional patches, and that these have been push-installed to any remote servers.

Thanks!

Hi, thanks for your suggestion.  I tried this that however it made not difference.  When the inventory job is submitted and if you look under the job monitor it just says initialising but nothing happens.

To fix this you then have to restart the Net backup services.

1. Try removing the library/stand-alone drive from Windows Device Manager and BE before disconnecting it.

2. Restart the server, and after it boots into Windows, shut it down.

3. Reconnect the autoloader and start it up. Once initialised, start up the server.

4. Run tapeinst.exe to install the latest Symantec drivers and make sure that the robotics (if an autoloader) show: Unknown Medium Changer.

5. Run the Inventory job again.

What type of autoloader/stand-alone drive is this?

Thanks!

Hi,

It is a Dell Power Vault 114T Dual tape drive.  There is no issues with the carrying out an inventory on the other tape drive which is configured for Symantec Net Backup as the Symantec application is installed and configured on a different server.

...and that is probably your problem...sharing a library between 2 different backup systems.

Try this: Stop NBU, and then restart the BE services. Once done, try your Inventory and report back...

From what I have seen, this isn't possible unless you had something like SAN SSO installed, and both servers were BE-based media servers.

Thanks!

I checked the event log on the server and have found the following error:

Backup Exec Alert Job Failed.  Job Inventory Drive 00283. The job failed with the following error: The Backup Exec Job engine system service is not responding.

I have checked for this error and from what I have found the fixes are:

1. Pause then upause the tape drive.

2. Install the latest fix patches to Symantec Net backup.

3. Rename the Catalog then create a new one then rename the old one back.

4. Uninstall the tape drive then re-install it.

5. Repair the database

It seems I may have to carry out a number of fixes to try and get to resolve the issue.

Yesterday I updated the Symantec software with the lastest fix packs.  This morning I paused then un-paused the tape drive, however in the Job Monitor windows the inventory job failed with Communication stalled.

...matter of interest, but what OS is the media server running? If Windows Server 2003, make sure that Removeable Storage service isn't running (stopped & disabled!).

Thanks!
