Issue Upgrading to SEPM RU5 on Windows 2003 Server

I am having an issue upgrading my SEPM server to the current version.  I think I followed all the instructions.  I turned off the replication (wwe weren't using any).  I stopped the SEPM service and closed the Services window before running the install program.  The install SEEMED to go all right but now the SEPM service will not start.  I keep getting an error when I try to manual start the service. "Could not start the Symantec Endpoint Proctection Manager service on Local Computer.  Error 1067:  The process terminated unexpectedly."  I have tried running the install program again.  No luck there.  I tried the Upgrade.bat file in the BIN directory.  That didn't seem to do anything.  I am running this on a Windows 2003 Server that has been virtualized and was running an earlier version of SEPM just fine.  Any Ideas as to what is going on?

Correction to my Posting

I checked the server after sumbitting the above post and saw that the SEPM service was running now.  I just can't get into the SEPM console.  Sorry for the confusion.

After checking for the required services mentioned check the ODBC connection as well. If its an embedded data base do this :-

In Answer to your questions...

General note to all, the SEPM service stopped running and again will not let me restart it.  I also tried rerunning the install routine.  It says that it is copying the installation packages and when it's finished copying, it stops and nothing happens.

Rafeeq:  I don't know what data base is running but the Symantec Embedded Database service is running.

Vikram and Sandip:  I went into the ODBC and tried to test the connection but it could connect.  I received an error "Connection faile: Unable to start database service"

AravindKM:  I am not even getting the login screen.  I double click on the desktop icon and nothing happens.  As for the log file the last date that is listed in it is Sept. 29, 2009.

Hi

You say symatec embedded DB service is running.if so you should be able run the ODBC test.
do u have any other applicaton using port 2638 DB port by default.
can you restart the DB service and check its stable
as aravind mentioned ..paste the scm server -0.log

 You need to fine tune your ODBC to make sure connection is successfull 

in the ODBC

in the database tab
Put server name just name not FQDN

Database file
make sure

\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\db\sem5
is selected.
in the network TAB
for TCP/IP put IP=Serverip:2638

Go back and Test Again and see if it comes successful.

Take a frsh coy of SEPM package
Run the setup
It will give you option for repair
Select it and after repair try to login...
(Believing that your database service is stable since Rafeeq suggested already to check it. )

Vikram:  I did what you

Vikram:  I did what you suggested.  Ran the test again this time I'm getting error messages say that "Intergrated login not allowed" or "Invalid username or password".  I unfortunately do not know the user name or password of the database.

AravindKM:  I have tried rerunning the setup routine.  It shows me that it is copying files and when it finishs copying, nothing happens.  I don't get any prompts to do anything.

SHP:  Tried to follow your links.  Second one lead me to a dead end.  The first one, I couldn't get into the the SEM5.log file as the file was locked.  any other suggestions

for the ODBC for the username

for the ODBC for the username put dba and for password put the password for your SEPM login ( the initial password you set for SEPM )
or recover that password using this article :

While upgrading the SEPM did your Database got upgraded?
I mean did you a wizard saying "upgrading the database from 0 - 100 %"
if you have not seen the database upgrade wizard then "Upgrade the Windows Script Version to 5.7"

Update

Vikram: Tried to follow your instructions.  Don't know initial password for SPEM.  I had reset the login password serveral months before doing this upgrade.  The new password does no appear to work.  Tried to recover password using the link offered.  The URL (http://localhost:8014/reporting) does not appear to work, it gives me a "This page can't be displayed".

Kavin:  I do not recall seeing the wizard say that it was upgrading the database.  I, however, can't upgrade the Windows Script on this machine at this time as it is in use.  The server is our file server and the upgrade wizard said that I might have to restart the machine to finish the upgrade.  I can't do that during normal business hours.

I had seen  a case where the rebooting  helped to resolve the issue

Prachand: As of this moment, I have not restarted the server.  As I stated before this is our main File server and I can't do anything to it during work hours.  I will try restarting it late this evening.

Hi all - have faced this last week - disaster recovery was the last active action because my client express he can not answer end users question about no green dot.
On 20 upgrades - that was the only one crash - please can the support team found us a quick resolve?
