Is it possible to Remove a single Management Server

Created: 23 Jul 2012 | 7 comments

Hi,

Is it possible to remove a managment server and then recreate it with the same name. Having an issue with our AV posted on here about a management server trying to locking an Admin password. Now we have also had intermintant problems with servers rebooting but since shutting down this Management servers the problem has gone away.

Yes it could be coincidence but on the off chance it isnt i want to be able to remove this server and rebuild it then re add it as a management server.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

To suggest best option would required following information

1) SEPM version

2) Total number of SEP clients

3) Embedded database or SQL database

4) Want to reinstall only SEPM or Server OS itself?

5) Is it synch with AD?

If planning to reinstall SEPM only then can follow disaster recovery.

SEP 12.1 : http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH160736

SEP 11.x: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH102333

If followin disaster recovery don't restore database immediately, after SEPM reinstall monitor the situation.

Hi,

Chetan details are as follows

1) SEP 12 RU1

2) ENDPOINT Clients 150

3) SQL Database

4) This estate contains two managment servers i want to remove one server rebuild the OS and then make it a management server again (Using the Previous Name)

5) No this is not synced with AD when i enabled this option it kept on locking the service account. Removed all credentials from the GUI and it still locked the account.

Kind Regards

Hi,

One quick question, SQL is on the same machine or it's on remote machine?

Hi,

The Database is held on a remote machine. So we have two management servers and a Database server. Want to take one of the management servers out rebuild the server readd the machine using the same name. I know I am going on about the name alot its just that i have a feeling that this is encrypted somewhere in the database and if i uninstall the management server i am also guessing it will not remove the database entries if they are in the DB.

Hello,

Assuming, you have SEPM1 and SEPM2 and want to Rebuild the SEPM1(primary server)

In this case, I would request you to first have all the clients report to the SEPM2.

Once done, perform the Disaster Recovery as suggested above.

Hope that helps!!

Hi,

Thanks for an update.

Go ahead and reinstall SEPM, I hope you would have configured failover/load balancing between SEPM's.

After removal of SEPM all the (150) clients should communicate with the secondary SEPM.

While doing reinstall of SEPM, select second option i.e Install an additional management server to an existing site.

To be on safer side take a backup using disaster recovery.
