Is it supported to run SQL Backup script follow by Transaction Log backup script under a single policy?
Created: 31 Oct 2012 | Updated: 08 Dec 2012 | 6 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.
I have 2 backup policy as follows:
1) SQL Backup Policy
2) Transaction Log Backup Policy
I have tested by adding the transaction log script into the first policy and the backup was successful.

From my observation, the Database backup will complete first follow by the transaction log. However, my consultant mentioned that this is not a supported setup and it is advisable to split the Database and Transaction log backup into 2 policy. Have anyone perform similar configuration in their environment before and encountered any issue?

By NetBackup 7.5 for MSSQL Administrator's Guide page 40, multiple batch files can be added into single policy. I say, supported.
Add batch files to set up a policy for automatic scheduling. All batch files that are listed in the backup selections list are run for manual backups and for Automatic Backup schedules. The schedules are specified under the Schedules tab. NetBackup runs the batch files in the order that the batch files appear in the backup selections list.
Of course, it is better to backup transaction log more frequently with dedicated policy.

How about 7.1 as I am currently running 7.1.0.3? Thanks.
It is exactly same with NetBackup 7.1 for MSSQL Administrator'sGuide Guide page 42.
