I've had it

The amount of suffering I have endured while trying to get this crappy software to work is uncalculable. I consider myself to be above average in computer literacy. This software doesn't like anyone who isn't a programmer or a computer engineer. It's just horrible.

Here is an example of a situation I encountered last week:

I had a laptop on our network that had SEP installed. I'm still working through the server management issues and installed SEP on only a handful of computers until I actually got the SEPM to recognize the clients (still can't get this to work) but this laptop seemed to be keeping itself up to date with virus definitions, etc. Well, the laptop caught a virus (one of those that puts up fake messages about how the PC is infected with spyware/viruses and to visit a link to remove it). The first thing I did was run SpyBot (also ran another free antispyware program) and it found a couple of things but after "fixing" those problems, the virus activities remained. I then ran a full scan with SEP. I double-checked the definitions dates and they were within a day or two of the current date. End result was SEP said there were no threats detected. WHAT?? NO THREATS?

Installed free version of AVG Antivirus and it detected 8 infections immediately and removed them. End result was that the laptop was back to normal.

Explain that one to me Syamntec. I have put a request in to my AV vendor that we get a refund for this software and we will seek out something else. In the event I can't, I will NEVER buy another Symantec product again.

"or a computer engineer"

Well at least we know it is not a problem with Symantec fact is I not sure what your skill level is but this is not a product for someone that is not a network admin. I had this up and running and working great in a few hours and deployed over a few days so not to cause to much traffic.   And now I am deploying it again but on an enterprise level.  So don't bash the product if you cannot even install it.

This product is advertised and reviewed for small businesses. PC MAG recommended it for such companies. I doubt they all have network engineers on staff.  I have 20+ years and have had mulitple problems. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of reports on these forums from IT resellers and support teams that have had issues rolling this out.  Rolling out should not require an engineer or top IT talent. I maybe concede that the finer points of configuration and such would require some higher knowledge, but not basic installation.

Besides, it this product catches viruses as well as their last did (Corporate 10.1), then we are all in a heap of trouble.  A quick visit to xxxhttp://mtc.sri.com/xxx (take out xxx to visit ... it is a site which rates commercial products on their ability to catch viruses and malware) shows that Symantec is well below the top leaders.  And I do mean way below.

Fidgit, you are one of the lucky ones, and it doesn't take more than a quick browse of these forums to realize that. I am not a network admin but I do manage our network and, while not formally trained in Information Technology, I am able to do things most of our users wouldn't try to do.

Thank you to Mike T for setting it straight with his comment:

"Rolling out should not require an engineer or top IT talent."

Any product that is this troublesome to install for so many people was obviously not very well thought out and/or tested before it was released. I have plenty of people who will back me up on that statement.

So I am glad that your installation went well, but if you want to criticize me for bashing the product, you'd better get started replying to all of the other posts in theis forum with the same answer you gave me. Se how many friends you make.
