People have reported success with the latest Java 6 series.  I think the readme states Java 6 update 14 is recommended. However, if you're on Vista or 7 you'll need to make sure you run the SEPM client with admin rights.  It's probably easiest to go to the properties of your SEPM shortcut and set it to always load with admin rights if you're using 7 or Vista.

Also its RU5....I know its goofy how they changed all the letters around.

I'm using the SEPM RU5 console with Java 6 update 16. It's working just fine.

One more confirmation that the console works with Java 6 Update 16...both on an XP machine and a Windows 7 machine.
