Job fails at last possible minute

This issue has been solved. See solution.

I just created 2 new full backup jobs in BE 2010 for windows servers.  I am backing up to a b2d.  My whole job runs and then when it's just about done verifying i get this error:

Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe0008442 - A memory allocation request failed. The computer may be running low on virtual memory.
Final error category: System Errors

I'v tried the follwing:

1.  Verify whether the Catalogs folder exists on the path mentioned in the Backup Exec console - Tools\Options\Catalog

2. Make sure the Folder has rights for the Backup Exec Service ID and SYSTEM.
(i'm not quie sure what this suggection means, I added the same user account to the folder as the logon account I used in BE)

3. If Backup Exec was installed to a different location than the catalog location, or recently moved, try changing the catalog location in Tools\Options\Catalog.

4. Verify whether the path mentioned in Tools\Options\Catalog is same as the path in the registry on the following location  "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\Misc\Catalog path"

Any ideas?

Also does it matter that the catalog path was set to:

E:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Catalogs\

When really is was going in one more folded deep

E:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Catalogs\Servername

...as long as the path to the catalogs folders shows up correctly, it should be fine. The default location (ie. without the SERVERNAME location is probably preferable).

That said, check the TN below and see if it applies to you:

Thanks for the response...  No it does not apply because I am not backing up an exchange server, nor do we even have one.  Any other ideas?

...just make sure that the media server is fully patched, and that these patches have been push-installed to any remote servers. If not, do so and try again.

Are you on BE 2010 R3 with SP2? Might be worth upgrading to this as it is free and you use your same licenses.

I have edited out the name of your server too yes

Thanks!

Hi

You can always install any updates any service pack for backup exec using live update so you can download and install sp2 for BE 2010 r3 using live update else you can use the below link to download manually if Media server is not connected to internet and your live update is not working

BE 2010 R3 SP2 - http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH178798  Post SP2 Hotfixes

Ok I installed them earlier through live update.  I am rerunning the job now, I'll let you know the out come early tomorrow.  Thanks

So after installing the updates the job still failed.  I have all the post service pack 2 hotfixes installed and SP2.  After the job failed I re-ran the job with only my data drives in the selection list C, D, and E. The job ran successfully without any exceptions.  So after that I selected the data drives plus the system state.  Once again the job runs all the way and just about when it is done verifying i get the following error:

Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe0008442 - A memory allocation request failed. The computer may be running low on virtual memory.
Final error category: System Errors

This server is our back up domain controller, it's running Server 2003 and it is running the following roles:

File Server
Active Directory
DNS Server
DHCP Sever
Wins Server

As far a BE goes it's running BE 2010, it is acting as it's own media server.  I belive it has the remote agent on it because it has the BE 2010 remote agent utility installed.  In the remote agent it was set to publish to the wrong media server so I changed that.  Can any one please tell me why this happening.

Thanks

Is the Remote Agent for Windows service running under a local system account ?

Secondly, consider running a defrag & chkdsk on the target B2D as well. Alternatively, try running the backup job (As a test) to another B2D on an alternate disk.

prs246191's picture

No, the remote agent is running with network admin creditials.  I also made a test job and ran it to a different B2D, same error:

Insufficient memory available.

V-79-57344-33858 - A memory allocation request failed. The computer may be running low on virtual memory

I am thinking it is definitely a problem with BE.  As long as I don't have the system state selected it runs fine.  Please give me any thought and or ideas.  Thanks

The remote agent needs to be under local system account.... would you pls change the credentials & retry.

prs246191's picture

should I click "The allow service to interact with desktop"?

prs246191's picture

In the logon properties of the service I selected "Local System account"...  Still the same error:

Insufficient memory available.

V-79-57344-33858 - A memory allocation request failed. The computer may be running low on virtual memory

Keep the ideas coming...  I appreciate all of the help and need to get this problem resolved.  Thanks

OK...so how much memory does the server have? If you're running to an external disk (DAS/SAN/NAS etc), try running the backup to a B2D on the server itself and see if you get the same error.

Have you checked to make sure that any AV running isn't perhaps blocking BE's access to the system State?

Thanks!
