This issue has been solved. See solution.

I have Symantec Endpoint Protection setup in my network with a parent server.  I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to do with laptops.  As of now we have them setup to be a managed client so that we know what is going on with virus defs.  So obviously the catch is they never get updates unless they plug into the network.  If we set them up as unmanaged then we have know idea what there defs are at.

Is there a way to set them so that they report to the parent server when pluged in and also go out to the internet for virus defs automaticly when they are outside of the network?

Location awareness. Set them

Location awareness.
Set them up to update from server when on your network, enable LU and let them update from Symantec when not on the network.
At least I think that's possible.
Our notebooks typically VPN back home even when on the road, so that they ALWAYS report back in, but LU is still enabled for those who for some reason can't connect or VPN to us.
Since almost everything our people do or even CAN do is based from our servers and our network, if they travel, they pretty much can't work until they VPN in.

Set all of their LiveUpdate

Set all of their LiveUpdate settings to go to the Symantec LiveUpdate site first.
And then SEPM or local LiveUpdate server next.
I have all of  my 'remote' notebooks managed and LU this way.  When they connect to the network, then I can see what defs they have, last scan, and if the policies changed they can be updated.
