Lenovo T410 BSOD after WinPE/Deploy AnyWhere

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi,

We're trying to deploy our image to this new model. Installation fails miserably to BSOD after image is deployed and Deploy Anywhere has injected drivers. We use WinPE as an automation environment.

GhDplyAw32.txt logfile in DS server looks like this:

A cancel has been requested.

Missing drivers detected:
Device type  : Network Device
PCI ID       : PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_10EA&SUBSYS_215317AA&REV_06
Description : Device Description Unavailable

I have downloaded SATA AHCI drivers from Lenovo's support page and injected them to Deploy Anywhere database through DS console. To me, it looks like that only NIC driver is missing. If I disable AHCI from computers BIOS, Windows starts normally after WinPE.

If installed with Windows XP media CD and floppy disk which contains same driver files, it finishes successfully, so HW seems to be alright. Any ideas?

Couple of things to check

First of all, check that the PCI ID reported above is actually present in the INF file associated with the drivers you have downloaded. Make sure that the drivers are for Vista 32 bit. Lenovo make soooo many different SKUs that some models could come with a Broadcom NIC and some with an Intel NIC. Turning off AHCI does suggest that the issue is with the SATA drivers.

If you happen to have any T410 units with the standard Lenovo build still on them, have a look at this article:
https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/utility-assist-identifying-plug-and-play-drivers

I wrote this utility as I too was finding problems with identifying the correct drivers for each new hardware arriving through the goods door, and it gives you a full list of the PNP IDs of all devices and some clue as to their function and type. Armed with this information, it is then simple to check that the INF file of any downloaded driver does support the PNP ID of the device in question.

Thank you EdT, I'll check

Thank you EdT,

I'll check that NIC PCI ID tomorrow, but imho missing NIC driver does not cause computer to BSOD after image, but mass storage driver does. There should be correct SATA driver in driver database, because my college successfully installed WinXP to this same computer and provided these same drivers from floppy disk during non-GUI setup.

I think I can get one T410 with Lenovo build on it. I'll try your tool tomorrow for it.

XP Drivers

You mentioned that you had used the same drivers as for your WinXP build. This may in fact be the problem, as the WinPE environment used by Altiris/Symantec is based on WinPE 2.0 which requires VISTA drivers in order to work correctly.
Don't lose sight of the fact that the version of WinPE you are booting with is technically a command line version of Vista and so needs the appropriate drivers. You can sometimes get away with XP drivers, but success is by no means guaranteed.
So try Vista driver first - as this has nothing to do with the image that will ultimately be deployed via GSS, as WinPE is memory based only, and only for the duration of the imaging.

Sorry for not mentioning that

Sorry for not mentioning that earlier, but those SATA drivers are in fact qualified for 32-bit Vista and XP versions by Lenovo.

Hi Teijo

Read this topic i started. https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/dep...
Hope that helps you.

There are some error at Lenovo/Intel drivers that you have manually fix.
I hope those errors are corrected in future by Lenovo/Intel

Your sata drivers are not

Your sata drivers are not installed because you get "A cancel has been requested."  first you need to add network drivers so deploy anywhere will install sata driver.

I followed your link and

I followed your link and added those two lines to e1k5132.inf and it solved my problem! Big hand to pashyn!

But I'm little confused here...I downloaded 32-bit Vista NIC driver for T410 and it contained those two lines, but it end up with BSOD. Only using XP driver and your edits to .inf file helped.

So you must add target OS drivers to deploy anywhere database, whatever it will be. But do you know what why that .inf file was missing those lines. Oh and Lenovo has still not fixed it.

Has anyone told Lenovo?

Maybe they haven't fixed them because no-one has told them there is a problem.
I have always raised driver issues with a Lenovo tech in the local sales office and had feedback from the manufacturer to confirm that the issue has been recorded.

Reported

Hi,

I reported this to Lenovo forums. Lets see if we can get this officially fixed by Lenovo/Intel.
