Licensing - License Key vs Serial
I'm trying to get the M-number so i can download my BackupExec 12.5-installation from fileconnect.symantec.com, however it's just impossible to understand what hoops you want me to jump through to get that number.
I go to licensing.symantec.com, i login with my account and i try to find some place where i can register by using the license key, which is the only thing i have in my package.
The package arrived in the post today, i have a white envelope that says "symantec backup exec 12.5 small business server premium edition, enterprise system builder edition". The back of it has a barcode with no useful information, inside is a white envelope with three cds and two "important license key information"-papers with three license-key stickers on each. That's all i have.
For me to download the actual installation package onto the server, which is some distance from me so i can't just drive over there, i NEED a m-something number for fileconnect, but unless i can register these license-keys it's impossible to get.
Why oh why do you hate me this much? what have i done to deserve beeing forced to use some illogical "license-portal" that just drives me insane everytime i log in?
What in gods name is the right way to use licensing.symantec.com? Why do i even need to register things to get a download-key?

Go to licensing.symantec.com and register ur product by either signing up for an account or sign in for exixting account. Then clieck New purchase and fill up the required form and submitit. Thats all what u need to do to register ur product.
To get the Software Login to fileconnect.symantec.com and select the Language and enter the Serial No written on the certificate which u recievd by post and select the pakage yu want to download.

and when i do that easy step
and when i do that easy step all i get is " * Our database does not recognize the serial number you entered 04-3014-xxxx-xxxxxx. Please re-enter your serial number." As i said a "License-Key" is all i have, not serial-number
Also trying to contact a support-person is impossible since i can't speak english at all. There are NO email-addresses available and the contact language for my country isn't my native tongue but english.

Write to them and they will definitly help u. If i used to face any licensing issue then i use to write to these ID.

The person on the other end eventually replied that since i bought a boxed-version of BE there was no reason to register the serialnumber on licensing, and since i had the cds there was no point in downloading from fileconnect. I disagree since i cannot drive to the server with the cd just to install, but..
anyway, problem solved.

I have a similar issue where
I have a similar issue where I just want to have a copy of the 12.5 setup program for DR purposes
I havent the M number for my 12.5 but I have the serial number.
This is located at a remote site & the paper licences are stored there
I tried to register the serial number but get invalid, Im glad this isnt an emergency, In a real DR suitation we would have failed by spending hours looking for download links

Anyway, already tried that i get a message Your product may no longer be available for download or physical shipment
I assume that means, you will have to pay for the very latest version which isnt helpful when I just want what the previous person should have done, kept a copy of the install! so my DR plan would now need to include upgrading one of the servers with a new version of Backup Exec before restoring the server
I have to recommend a replacement routine for this site, currently all 9 servers have backup exec, but after this support experience im thinking of finding an alternative
Surely with all the keys & codes I have theres no need to be so protective over the install package ?
