Licensing on SAN

This is something concern to licensing part..... We have Ten Client servers connected to SAN switch. We are taking backup through LAN write now to the Backup Exec server. We brought new SAN library and want to configure backup data travelling through FC. Do we require a media server license for the 10 clients or we can continue with the existing agent licenses? Kiran

You would need Media Server licenses to backup data over SAN. And for sharing tape devices among more than one server you need SSO license. For centralized management CASO is required. With 2012, CASO and SSO are part of Enterprise Server Option bundle.

In order to utilise the SAN for backups of your servers, every server needs to be connected to the SAN. Furthermore, you need to license BE on each server along with the requisite agent (like Exchange etc). So yes, in this case you would requre 1 media server license per server with any agent.

Otherwise, you can install the RAWS agent on these servers and back them up across the LAN.
