    Hi Everybody.

Somebody know how much lifetime has a encrypted disk?
Somebody know if exist some Symantec documentation about this?
    Regards and Thanks

    Dear Mariomendez83,

Each hard drive has its own MTTF or Mean Time To Failure that is found during testing. Drve manufacturers supply that information per-drive, and it is different for almost every drive. Those numbers are available to show the average lifespan of a hard drive. I do not believe that encryption would cause much of an effect on that time to failure. It shouldn't cause any more stress than performing a non-quick format, or zeroing out a drive.

That being said, if a drive does begin to show signs of failure, it can be more difficult to recover a failing encrypted drive.

I hope that has answered your question. Feel free to let me know if I can clarify anything.

    Hi Mariomendez83,

Also (going further.....)  if you are worried that sth is going on with your drive or you think that might be a potential failure on your encrypted drive(s) you might try to check so called S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology)

Verify your laptop model / check BIOS if you can run it from it / check support page of your laptop model or install one of the application like
CrystalDiskInfo to have this status retreived as for now.

    Thanks to both

    My problem is the following:

I have a customer with Drive Encryption that since they encrypt their drives, It's beginning to fail. Are a pair but now my customer thinks that this fail is caused for Symantec Drive Encryption. I'm sure that this is no possible but I'd have something as documentation o something else for my support

We do have a detailed guide to drive recovery. That guide is available here :
Drive Encryption Diagnosis and Recovery - Symantec Drive Encryption & PGP Whole Disk Encryption - http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH149679

Additionally, it sounds like your customer may have a RAID configuration (You mentionend they are a pair). Symantec is very picky about what raid it will support. HARDWARE RAID 0 and RAID 5 should be OK as long as they are not GPT. Software RAID is definitely not supported

Beginning with version 10 of PGP Desktop, PGP Whole Disk Encryption is supported on Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 on (Hardware) RAID disk drives. PGP WDE supports internal system RAID-1 and RAID-5 formatted with MBR partitioning style only (GPT partitioning style is currently not supported).

    I'm Sorry, I don't explained very well.
Yes, are a pair of drives but these are of a pair of laptops.
    I don't have RAID array.
    these were single drives
The Laptops are Sony Vaio and the drives are Samsung and Hitachi
Physically, the drives are in a good state but logically these lost all partitions

In that case, you have a good chance of recovery if you follow the instructions that I had linked to above your last post. :)

Feel free to let me know if you have any questions after reading the guide.
