Linux Antivirus issue during compiles

rtvscand is capturing 95% of CPU during compiles. This is slowing the system down dramatically. Is there a workaround to prevent this issue aside from shutting down the rtvscand service? This is a brand new Dell Core2 Duo with 4 GB ram - RHEL 5.2 workstation. The PC is used for software developement so there are multiple compilers loaded along with VMWare. Have I overlooked something in the configuration or is this typical? It seems that the only time the issue arises is when the user compiles the software that they are developing.
