    Hi All,

I am attempting to start using Patch Management for Linux.

Does linux patch management not have the concept of 'superseded'?  I enabled distribution of many update bulletins on Friday.  Today I went looking and I now have ~7000 packages enabled on my package servers and most of them are just various iterations of updates for the same packages.

If we look at something simple like net-snmp-per, it l has every version there from 5.3.1-24 up to 5.3.2.2-9(9 different version).  This is the same for pretty much every linux component.  When I triggered the distribution on Friday, I just went through and downloaded packages everywhere they were applicable.

Now in Windows, only the current update becomes applicable and superseded patches don't appear.  Is this not the case here?

I am really hoping someone can assist.

    Thanks,
    Matt

Supercedence is not fully supported for Patch Linux. It means that reports show all updates and they all are downloaded if you select them.

If multiple superseded updates are included into the same policy only the latest one will be installed on client machine.

My issue is there are thousands of applicable updates.  I was going to make policies that installed one month at a time but this won't include the same files in the same policy.

How do I bring a group of systems that are 2 to 3 years out of date up to current using Altiris Patch?

I just don't see an easy way.
