Linux recovery

Is it possible to use Backup Exec System Recovery to make a system recovery for a linux system (if yes, which RedHat distributions, with which kernels) ?

Hello,

While Backup Exec System Recovery does support certain Linux file systems (the main question is file system support rather than kernel support) such as ext2 and ext3, Backup Exec System Recovery does not currently run under Linux natively.

So in order to take a backup of Linux volumes, they would have to be available via a Windows system (i.e. a Linux hard drive in a Windows system).

We are looking at the possibility of adding native Linux support in the future.

Thanks.

Hello Bill,

So today, it is possible to take a backup of Linux data with Backup Exec System Recovery running on a Windows System, but not a system backup (as bare-metal) for disaster recovery ?

Thanks

Hello,

If you take the hard drive from a Linux system, and put it in a Windows system as a secondary drive, you could use Backup Exec System Recovery (which only runs under Windows) to create a recovery point of entire Linux hard drive.

The recovery point could then be used for disaster recovery of that Linux system, since the restore process is agnostic as to what operating system is contained in the recovery point.  You would simply boot the Linux system with the recovery disk, select the Linux recovery point, and point it to the hard drive of that system.

So the hard part is generating the recovery point of the Linux volumes, since BESR does not currently run natively under Linux.  Restoring is the easy part.

Let me know if you have any further questions.
