  • 1.  Live Update cannot connect to host

    I have corporate client version 8.1.0.825 with Scan Engine 4.2.0.7.  Live update will no longer update automattically. Also, when I press the Live Update button I get the following error:

    > AV Engine 5.0 Definitions
    > Avenge 1.5 MicroDefs2 Corp
    > LiveUpdate
    > Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Client NT

    Initializing...
    Unable to connect to host
    LiveUpdate could not retrieve the catalog file of available Symantec product and component updates. Please verify that you are able to connect to the Internet and run LiveUpdate again.
    LiveUpdate session is complete.The following Symantec products and components are installed on your computer.


    Live Update has not been working since 19 Feb 10 rev.2

    Can any one help me to get this portion working again.

    If you check the liveupdate log (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate\Log.LiveUpdate), there may be some indication as to why it's failing (proxy authentication required, etc).  However, this is a very, VERY old version:

    "Symantec Antivirus 8.0 reached its End of Support Life as of November 30, 2005 and Symantec Antivirus 8.1 reached its End of Support Life as of January 31, 2007, as defined in the Symantec Enterprise Technical Support Policy. Therefore virus definition updates are no longer supported for this product."

    Sandra,

    I checked the location you mentioned. The log files are dated to 2004. Nothing current to this year. When I open any of them up, a quick scan of Spybot S&D is done for Malware and Heuristic. There is no mention of a proxy or identification required or why its failing. Just thought you would like to know.

    So if there are no entries in log.liveupdate since 2004, how was this machine getting updates before?  Hm.  Can you connect to http://liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com or http://liveupdate.symantec.com via a web browser?  What is the OS?  [Major edits to this after re-reading the original post.]

    I never supported version 8, so I'm giving best guesses knowing what I know about 10.  Bear in mind, version 8 is not sufficient for the modern threat landscape.  I would strongly recommend at least SAV 10, or preferably SEP (if the system meets the minimum requirements).

    Hi,

    Please open the settings.liveupdate file from the following location.

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate

    In that file, locate the following line:

    "HOSTS\0\ACCESS=" , let us know the URL provided in front of = sign.

    Aniket
