  • 1.  LiveUpdate Administrator - separate server or install on SEPM?

    Posted Mar 05, 2010 02:32 PM
We have a medium/small environment and would like to have the LiveUpdate button accessible on the clients. My understanding is the only way it will show up is to select the "Use a LiveUpdate Server" which then means either configuring clients to connect to Symantec LiveUpdate or an Internal LiveUpdate Server. Our preference is to have the LiveUpdate button but connect with an Internal Server when requested.

    I have 2 questions
    1. Can we install the LiveUpdate Administrator on the server that is running the SEPM or does it need to be a separate server?
    2. Can we install the LiveUpdate Administrator on a server that is currently only being used as a 2nd server for the old environment SAV CE 10.x? It has no clients accessing it and was only introduced on the offchance the primary server would be unavailable..
    Thanks...

The best option is to use it on the other server..
But still I don't get the IDEA why you want the Liveupdate button to be enabled just to get connected to LUA ( internal network ) when you can get the same definitinos from SEPM.

If you have both on same server then if server goes down then both will be in-accessible

LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x and Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager on the Same Physical Server

Best put it on 2nd server for the old environment SAV CE 10.x

Thanks for the advice... My preference really would be to have a separate server and the KB certainly spells out that it is not advisable... Helps as well to have a KB to refer to in case someone asks.

Without the Liveupdate button, a client can still be refreshed from the SEPM,is that correct? I am still trying to wrap my head around where things are and how the bits and pieces are put together... lol - my intuitive sense isn't meshing easily with the SEPM interface... ;)

Yes..Liveupdate button has nothing to do with SEPM and Client communication. Its just used for External updates from the Internet.

If the users wants to update definitions manually through SEPM, they can right click the SEP icon and press "Update Policy". No need for the run liveupdate button while connected to the corporate network.
