    Posted Dec 29, 2010 01:59 PM

I am setting up an Endpoint Protection Manager server (currently a single server) and am trying to figure out the purpose of the LiveUpdate Administrator.  It seems that, since there is a LiveUpdate policy within the manager that can download and push updates, it would seem the LiveUpdate Administrator would only be useful if you wanted to set up a test environment to test the updates prior to releasing to production.  In all the reading I've found online and in the manuals I cannot seem to find consistent "best practices" recommendations.  I like the idea of being able to test and then release updates but have not gotten that deep into the LiveUpdate administrator yet and would like to get some opinions, both from tech advisors and those with practical real world experience.  Thank you!

LUadmin is used when you have mutilple syamtec products and you have one server facing internet to download all the necessary updates

if sepm has access to internet then installing LUadmin would waste some space.

SEPM liveupadte is cable of handling the Liveupdate requirement for the SEPM and the SEP Client.
LUA would be needed in the following case:

    1. More than one Symatec product and LUA would download LU for all
    2. Update needs to be tested before going to Production
    3. SEPM has no acess to the ineternet. So LUA would get the update from the internet and update the SEPM

Best Practices for LiveUpdate Administrator (LUA) 2.x

If you install SEPM and you need to distribute updates/definitions for SEP clients only then you don't need to install LUA as it is going to do the same job as your SEPM.

Thumbs up for Prachand who gave reasonable cases when LUA may be necessary. I can add one document more:

    LiveUpdate Administrator's Guide
    ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/liveupdate/luadmin.pdf

so that you can try LUA if you really need it.

LUA 2.x is a great tool in certain environments and circumstances- an additional one, to what is mentioned above, is highly-secure networks where clients and SEPMs have no internet connectivity.

How to update content on a Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager that doesn't have Internet access (http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH104893)

In most cases, though, there is no need for an LUA 2.x server in an all-SEP environment where the SEPM can downlaod and distribute its own defs.

    Thanks and best regards,

#4: You have a number of SEP for Mac clients that you don't want all reaching out over the internet for updates.

In this case I would ONLY have it host the Mac content, and let the Windows clients get their stuff from the SEPM. :)

Well, I meant specifically that SEPM can manage Mac but not provide updates for it, which is different than other Symantec updates available that are not related to SEP (SAV for Linux, etc).
