  • 1.  LiveUpdate configuration woes

I'm trying to configure our SAV CE 10.1 to allow all the laptops in the company to perform manual LiveUpdate from the internet for occasions when they are off-site.

I have successfully configured the Virus Definitions update via the Symantec System Center console for the laptops group to collect updates from the parent server. This works fine when the laptops are on the internal company network. In the same configuration area I allowed the laptops to launch LiveUpdate. When I test the LiveUpdate function from any one of the laptops it fails almost immediately with "LU1814 - LiveUpdate could not retrieve the update list". I noticed (just prior to this error occurring) that the LiveUpdate procedure still seemed to be trying to 'Connect' to the parent server (which is on the internal company network).

This LiveUpdate error seems to be a common issue on these forums, but I haven't read any thread which provides a solution for the issue I seem to have (parent server updates working fine, but manual LiveUpdate failing).

    Can anyone advise?

    TIA

    Dave

I finally found some documentation that seemed to point me in the right direction....
It seems that SAV CE has two main methods of updating client virus defs. One is a push method from a parent server and the other is a LiveUpdate pull method from a client. What I didn't understand was that the LiveUpdate method appears to be entirely separate to the push method. With that little nugget of information, I have now re-configured the LiveUpdate settings for the parent server group for the company laptops to LiveUpdate from Symantec Servers (i.e. the internet) rather than a parent server. This seems to fix the problem I was having with LiveUpdate from a client failing immediately with LU1814.
What I'm not yet certain of is whether this now means those clients will no longer receive the push updates from the parent server (which is pulling down a master live update fileset).
    Can anyone clarify?
