  • 1.  Liveupdate to Internal Server fails when it runs from the SEP schedule, but works when clicking LiveUpdate button on SEP client

    Posted Mar 05, 2009 02:55 PM

I've been working at this now for quite some time and have tried everything I have found on this forum and others.

Problem : Liveupdate to Internal Server fails when it runs from the SEP schedule (Using HTTP Server), but works when clicking LiveUpdate button on SEP client (Using UNC share)

    Environment:

Windows Server 2003 SP2 with LiveUpdate Administrator 2.2.1.13 and SEPM V11.0.3001.2224.

Windows XP Pro SP2 clients with SEPC V11.0.3001.2224 And LiveUpdate 3.3

    Background:

    1) My Windows Server 2003 SP2 downloads the updates from the Symantec live update server using a LiveUpdate Administrator Download Schedule and distributes to a directory on itself. This all works fine. My Live Update policy in SEPM has an internal server define that uses a specific TCP Port, 6660.

    2) The only way I can get LiveUpdate working from the clients is by clicking the LiveUpdate button in SEP Client and have the liveupdt.hst (created by LUA) file pointing to a server with a UNC connection. This works fine and downloads and installs all updates. HTTP connection this way gets the same error as described in #3.

    3) The only way I can get the LiveUpdate schedule configured in SEPM to work partially, is to have it pointing to an HTTP server in the Settings.Hosts.LiveUpdate (created by LUA) file. I could never get the UNC connection to even get connected (tried the Null share idea and ANONYMOUS LOGON). This downloads the updates, but then gets an error and quits. I have supplied the Live Update log below. I've bolded the areas that seem to be a problem. I need this to work so users don't have to keep running LiveUpdate themselves.

I monitored the "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate\Downloads" folder and it successfully downloads the livetri.zip file and all the grd and sig files.

For files 1236188713jtun_90303018.cal, 1236188713jtun_90303018.skn and 1236210680jtun_nav2k8en90303023.m25 it logs the sequence where it says it "may be divided into bandwidth reducing segments." for all three files it tries to download segmented files, but fails saying it doesn't exist on the server, which it doesn't because the "segments" folder doesn't exist. It then says for all 3 files it will download the full update file and in all 3 cases says it doesn't exist on the server, BUT they all do. I have verified that all three files exist and from all the clients thru either windows explorer as a UNC path or the IE using the HTTP URL, I can get to all of them.

Patch processing also fails with a 0x80004005. I am assuming the two problems are related.

Since I can get connected via HTTP via the SEPM schedule, I would be happy to just get the downloads to work properly this way and leave everything else as is.

I've tried the re-installing Liveupdate, re-registering between LiveUpdate and SEPM and the SEP client repair thing also. Also tried the "lucatalog -update" thing too.

We had a similar issue where clients that had an authenticated users logged into would download fine but rig machines that sometimes had no-one logged into would never get automatic downloads ( only manual, when a user is logged in) ...

I edited the permissions to the clu-prod folder , shared it out and added anonymous logon to share permissions & security permissions and things started to work correctly.

Thanks for the Reply brav, but, I also have done what you mentioned.

As I stated, it gets to the folder because it downloads the livetri.zip file and unzips all the grd and sig files. Did yours doing this ?

Also, what permissions did you give ANONYMOUS LOGON ? I have Read for Share Permisions and Read & Execute, List Folder Contents and Read for Security. Did you give it Full Control ?

Also, I don't use the clu-prod folder. I have a custom one an a different drive. I've wondered if SEP/Liveupdate might have an issue with this.

I wanted to stay away from ANONYMOUS LOGON but I like you, it was the only way to even get it to work period.

    Again, thanks for your reply

    Please check this document:

    Aniket,

It runs if I go to the clients and click the SEP LiveUpdate button. It just doesn't run when it kicks off from the SEPM schedule. Here are the logs for both runs. It's not authenticating correctly when kicked off from the scheudle. I've updated the liveupdt.hst file on the clients that I created with LUA. Isn't that what it uses when run from the schedule and uses settings.hosts.liveupdate when clicking the button.

It gets E_UNABLE_TO_CONNECT_TO_NETWORK_RESOURCE If I do the stuff in the link you provided, is that going to fix this issue.

Account launching LiveUpdate is not a logged in user's account

How do you find out what Account it is talking about ?

Is it the one on the "Edit Liveupdate Server"  form in Server Settings for the LiveUpdate policy ?

Is so, no matter what I put here, it fails, besides, if you put something here, it doesn't embed the password in the settings.hosts.liveupdate file.
