    Does anyone know where to look on the client as to why the Mac OS X SEP 11.0 RU6 is failing to update content from an internal LiveUpdate server?

    Unfortunately the -2001 error is a pretty generic message.  What sort of machine is hosting the LUA server?   Which version of LUA?  Is it being hosted via IIS?

    Might there be a proxy between your Mac and the LUA server?  If so, may want to set exclusions on the client for this LUA address.

    If you try to manually navigate to http://[SERVER  NAME (or SERVER IP)]:80/livetri.zip from a browser on the Mac, does it prompt you to download it?

    Any resolution

    See my post above.  Does your Liveupdate log (/Library/Application Support/Symantec/LiveUpdate/liveupdt.log) resemble the one given above?

    Sorry for the late response Sandra.  The server hosting the LUA is a Windows 2003 Standard build.  There is no proxy in between.  When we try to go directly to the livetri.zip it does prompt to download

    No worries. The -2001 basically indicates a failure to connect and download the catalog file from any server.  it could be a communication error; it could be that in the policy, the URL to the directory hosting the definitions is not correct.

    Title: '"There was an error performing the update" when running LiveUpdate for Symantec Antivirus for Macintosh'
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2008110508485848

    From the log, "[SERVER NAME]:80" indicates to me you are hosting the definitions via IIS and not the built-in distribution center.  Have you seen this?

    Title: '"There was an error performing the update" when running Macintosh LiveUpdate retrieving updates from an IIS server'
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2009021311350848

    To verify the configuration here's this, too:

    Title: 'Using the LiveUpdate Administration Utility on a PC to download updates for Symantec AntiVirus 10 for Macintosh clients'
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2007152728050998

    (The information regarding creating a preference set only applies to SAV for Mac, not SEP (which is handled through policy, obviously), but the info regarding the URL to provide the clients is the same.  Will need to update this document...)

    I'll check out the links you provided.  In regards to the other statement, IIS in handling basic web duties for the server and for the LUA, but I created the MAC distribution center the same way I created the SEP11 PC one and the SAV10 PC one.  I attached a screenshot showing the MAC Distribution Center.  Also, am I downloading the correct content for SEP 11 or do I need to change to SAV for MAC?  Let me know if I can provide more in depth info on the MAC DC.  Thanks for all your help.

    - Double check that distribution is working (Last connection says "Never")
    - Make sure the URL in the policy matches the one in the window above.
    - The Macs AV programs use the same defs (NAV/SAV/SEP for Mac), but you may want to double check the available product list for SEP for Mac
    - I'd definitely review the IIS doc above for the file types.

    Though unrelated to your current problem, the right content for your Mac is "Symantec Endpoint Protection for Mac Virus Defs". If you dont find this in your LUA's product catalog, then perform an update to the product catalog and you should be seeing this there.

    I am having the same problem.  When I run Live Update the client connects to my Live Update Server and then the client tells me everything is up-to-date when it is not.  I can download the livetri.zip file.  However I don't see a livetri file with mac in its name.  Then ones I have are listed as sesm$20virus$20definitions$20win32$20v1_....livetri.zip.  Should there be a Mac version of this file too?

  • 12.  RE: LiveUpdate Logging for SEP 11.0 RU6 on Mac OS X

    I don't have an LUA installation to refer to directly.  However, Mac definitions have file extensions of .osx and .osi.  You may want to review the document for configuring LUA to host Mac definitions, as well as what's referred above, particularly if LUA is being hosed out of IIS:

    Title: 'Using the LiveUpdate Administration Utility on a PC to download updates for Symantec Endpoint Protection/Symantec AntiVirus 10 for Macintosh clients'
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2007152728050998

    Make sure the Mac products are being both downloaded and distributed.  If what the client has is the same or newer than what LUA is offering, then you will see that 'everything is up-to-date' message.

    LUA server is on OSX server and was able to update sep clients until 8/5/10

    Log file says no new updates but that is false since 10.2.3 clients are pulling updates.

    Also there appears to be no way of adding a secondary server into the conf files when controlled by SEPM Server and policies.  This is a problem for mobile mac users who may be off line for a time.

    SAV Mac definitions and SEP Mac definitions have two different product designations.  Double check on LUA that this content is also being downloaded.  The lua-application.log* should have some hints as to what's happening.  These can be collected by the debug.do command.  See the following:

    Title: 'How to Collect Troubleshooting Information from LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x'
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2009030211283748

    Also there appears to be no way of adding a secondary server into the conf files when controlled by SEPM Server and policies.  This is a problem for mobile mac users who may be off line for a time.

    This is (unfortunately) correct because a heartbeat into the SEPM would change the conf file back to the policy setting, and location switching is not possible for Macs.  You might be able to create an entry for a second "internal LiveUpdate server" and point it back to the Symantec server (via http, liveupdate.symantec.com and liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com) so that when failure to the true internal site occurs, it should pass to the next on the list.  I haven't tested this directly myself, but the policy is really only asking for a URL, no indication this is restricted to internal addresses.  No credentials are needed for Symantec's servers.

    I would suggest submitting an Idea here on the forum to request failover for Internal LUA to Symantec LiveUpdate Servers or Mac location awareness, officially.

  • 16.  RE: LiveUpdate Logging for SEP 11.0 RU6 on Mac OS X

    Posted Sep 10, 2010 11:48 AM

    You're talking about LUAU on the Mac?  This is a thread about LUA 2.x on Windows.  This likely should have been a new thread.

    To which document are you referring that tells you to set it to NAV for Mac definitions?  I edited the following document extensively after we determined that SEP for Mac definitions could not be served by LUAU.

    Title: 'Using the LiveUpdate Administrator on a PC to download updates for Symantec Endpoint Protection/Symantec AntiVirus 10 for Macintosh clients'
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2007152728050998

    The definition files are the same but the product designations are different.

    What if anything else changed on 5 August?

    What are you saying?  That the product updates are not supported by LUA on a mac?  We changed nothing on the 5th but somthing defiantely did on your end.

    What I'm saying is that as I understand it, LUAU for Mac is not able to serve SEP for Mac updates.  (Believe me, I wish that it did.)  If there is a specific document that you found that suggests otherwise, please let me know so that it can be updated.  LUA 2.2.x is recommended for serving updates to SEP for Mac clients.

    I just noticed this in your original log:

    Sep 9, 2010 3:14:06 PM Loading guard file:
    /private/tmp/liveupdate/liveupdatehosts/0/url=http:/liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com:80/1284063245912/liveupdt.grd

    It looks like part of the liveupdate.conf file (hosts/0/url=http:/liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com:80) is part of this address.  This stands out because you're connecting to macavconsole.stp.mrll.com:80 / 10.228.21.165, and you mentioned wanting failover to a Symantec LU server.  What does your configuration LiveUpdate policy for Mac clients look like?  to me, it doesn't even look like it is asking about definitions, just LiveUpdate.

    No, it is not part of the address, it is just a abitrary location in the liveupdate.conf. This entry was defined by SEP and we did not change it.

    workdir=/tmp/liveupdatehosts/0/url=http://liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com:80

    OK... when I look at my liveupdate.conf file (as a managed SEP Mac client) I see the following defined:

    ############################################################
    #                                                          #
    # livepdate.conf - Symantec LiveUpdate configuration file  #
    #                                                          #
    # This file is used to configure the settings used by #
    # LiveUpdate                                               #
    #                                                          #
    ############################################################

    cacheMode=false
    hosts/0/url=http://liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com:80
    hosts/1/url=http://liveupdate.symantec.com:80
    hosts/2/login:...
    hosts/2/mode=passive
    hosts/2/password:...
    hosts/2/url=ftp://update.symantec.com/opt/content/onramp
    logfile=/Library/Application Support/Norton Solutions Support/LiveUpdate/liveupdt.log
    maxPackageContentSize=734003200
    maxPackageSize=734003200
    maxTriFileSize=10485760
    maxZipFileSize=614400
    workdir=/tmp/liveupdate

    The workdir variable is not something that should make a difference to a successful download, but changes to that variable can only be made as a result of direct editing.  There is no way to change that through the SEPM.

    As for the client JLU session, it's connecting, getting the minitri.flg, getting the livetri.zip, reading the guard file (liveupdt.grd), then is quitting.  If you want to upload your livetri.zip file, feel free--my feelings are that the internal LU server is offering products the SEP Mac client can't use.

    If it was previously working and then stopped, I'm not sure why that would be, since everything I can find indicates it should not have been able to.  If you have a LiveUpdate log from a client that goes back before the 5th of August, feel free to upload that too (as a file attachment).

    Do you have any update on this?  Is your issue resolved, and if so, did anything I suggested help?  smiley

    illiterati: how about for you?
