  • 1.  Local Update Service - Symantec.cloud - Use clients as host?

    Posted Jan 29, 2014 04:27 PM

We are considering going with Symantec's cloud AV for our anti-malware needs. One of the most intriguing aspects of this is service is the Local Update Service and its ability to conserve a lot of Internet chatter over our network.Wanted to know if any of you are using this and what "host(s)" you have running the service. I was tempted to enable endpoints that are running a client OS (Win7 Pro 64-bit) that are not really utilized all that much anyway, so why not make them a host for this? However in reading through the Implementation Guides and such, they recommend a server OS. Why is that and have any of you had any luck doing what I am thinking about attempting. Thanks to all.

It's just a recommendation but is not a necessity. Probably because 24/7 uptime is preferred (check in once every 12 hours) as well as at least 4GB of RAM and a faster hard drive. Also, depending on the number of hosts that will be connecting to it, server OS allows unlimited connecions while XP/Win7 are capped at 10 concurrent connections unless you hack at the registry. I'm sure you will be fine though.

Was checking this video from Symantec , they have used Win7 OS for LUS,

You can use the less utilized win7 OS,

We have roughly 500 endpoints spread accross 8 subnets so I will probably designate at least 1 PC or more in each subnet to serve as Local Update "hosts". Do you think I would still be ok? According to documentation about to 100 agents (50 agents concurrently) per LU host.

If you have the resources to designate 2 or more Local Update hosts, I think you should be fine.
