I've just taken over support for a small network. They have 10 workstations, 1 server (SBS 2011).

The server and all but one client have Symantec Endpoint Protection version 12.1.1101.401 (Release) RV1MP1. It's been a few years since I've used SEP but it looks to me like all the clients were installed in managed mode as I'm unable to change some settings. I would've thought the server would have the SEP manager installed but it does not, it has the SEP client same as all the workstations. One workstation has nothing installed. Is there a way to locate what computer had the endpoint manager installed or can I just install it on the server and try to connect the clients to it? I'm wondering if the previous IT people installed the manager on one of their computers in order to deploy?

    Thanks.

You can check SEP client GUI host name or IP address your SEPM manager.

SEP client GUI -> Help ->Troubleshooting ->-Management -> Server (Showing Your server name or IP address)

If all client are unmanaged server filed showing Self-managed.

On a client go to Help >> Troubleshooting. Should show here or on the Connection Status tab

Perfect, thank you, it shows the management server is the SBS server, however clients have not been able to contact it since 11/10/14 so apparently SEP Manager was removed then. Am I right in assuming I can just install the management server software back on the server? Also, the client does not seem to have or be able to locate their Symantec license. I don't see this anywhere in Help, about or troubleshooting that might show their license info. Any other way to find that?

I've downloaded the Symhelp tool, looks like that may help with the licensing question.

If the SEPM was completely remove then yes you can reinstall and just push a new sylink to the clients in question. This will also take care of the licensing issue as they will pickup the license from the SEPM.

How do I replace the client-server communications file on the client computer?

Yes, it should report on it. Once you connect the clients to the SEPM, they will download the license file though.

The Symhelp tool information shows serial number but is only 4 characters, followed by a date. That does not seem right. I will have the client continue looking for the info.

That's the policy number from the SEPM. Actual licensing probably won't show up in the symhelp tool. Ideally, you want to have your serial number so you can check with support. That and a customer number or ID. Support should be able to get this all sorted for you though.
