Need to troubleshoot client computers. How can I view the logs using the viewer?  Is there an install for the client?

    Thanks,

    Rick,

on the affected client machines, open a command prompt and run the following command:

     regsvr32 %AGENTINSTALLDIR%\aexagentdiagnostics.dll

You should then, if it succeeds, have a list of agent troubleshooting options when you right click on the agent icon in systray , including a log viewer.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO2057 is the symantec kb article.

Alternatively, if you don't want to access this from the client, use RAAD (Remote Altiris Agent Diagnostics) v2:

    Hi Rick.

You can use LogViewer to see the logs of the client agent.

If your client is a Windows machine, you have two "solutions" for viewing the logs of the agent:

1.- Installing the LogViewer in the client, and watching "locally" the logs

2.- Copying the logs from the agent into a folder on the server, and using the logviewer in the server.

For non-windows clients, I'm afraid the option for copying the LogViewer to the client is not valid.

For installing the LogViewer into a client, you can just copy a folder from the SMP server into the client local disk. The folder to copy is located in the SMP server, in the path c:\Program Files\Altiris\Diagnostics (if you used the default installation path).

When the LogViewer is copied, open it, and in File > Watch Folders, you can configure the folder/s to view the logs from.

Copying the logs helps you in avoiding installing the LogViewer (if you must troubleshoot several agents), but you loose the "real time" feature of the LogViewer.

    Hope this helps you:

Thanks that helped, I didn't realized that this also worked with 7.  Here is a updated link  http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO2057

While researching I found these links and was amazed that I had never found this before.  This tool is exactly what I was looking for because I don't have to remote to the computer to collect a lot of useful information and can perform actions remotely.

Great post. Thanks as this is very helpful for us as well!

    edit:

How is this on 7.1? We are about to upgrade and wondering if anyone else can verify it?

I'm currently testing with 7.1 and RAAD works as expecting for me, but I'm new to using it so other may have better information.

    Falquian,

I've tried copying the "Diagnostics" folder from our SMP 7.0 MR4 server to both my Win 7 and Win Xp workstations and launching LogViewer.exe. All that happens is a brief hourglass then nothing. The logviewer never makes it into the process list. Is there a specific path the diagnostics folder needs to be in (it was in D:\Program Files\Altiris\Diagnostics on the server)? Do some of the dll's in that folder need to be registered?

    Thanks,

    Jim

No need to register any dll (at least I didn't have to register any), and, from my experience, you can copy the Diagnostics folder in ny folder in your desktop machine.

The only caution you have to take into account is to monitor the folder/s where the logs are. Have a look at this article, it may help you:

Also, if you have a question, it's best practice to start a new discussion.  Thanks!
