Looking to set up an offsite back up with our 2nd remote office

Created: 07 Aug 2012 • Updated: 04 Oct 2012 | 3 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

Currently, we have one server running Windows 2008 and we use Backup Exec. We have a remote location which we would like to set up as an off site backup.

What options do we have? What hardware and software will we need to make this happen?

Are you going to use the remote office as a backup site for your office?  If this is the case, you do not need any further licences.

If you are going to backup to the remote office or backup the remote office, you need to detail now you are going to transfer the information from one location to another.

yes, we would like to set the remote site up as the backup location. Currently we are backing up to external USB drives but if we can set up a remote off-site backup, that would be more convenient and we would only need to take the external backup drives off-site every couple of weeks instead of every day. What are we going to need at the remote office?

There is no way minimise the frequency of bringing your external disks to the remote site.  You either bring your external disks to the remote site or transmit the backup information to the other site.

If you choose to transmit the backup information, you would need to link up the two sites electronically.  Install media servers with the dedup option on both ends and then use optimised duplication to copy the dedup'ed backup sets from one location to the other.  You would also need a CASO licence.
